basjoo flower hiding under broken leaves

I was starting to take down some of the plants today and after having cut most of the lower leaves I found this. Came very close to cutting through it with the wind damaged parts before I saw it....

Re: Is anyone growing near a swamp?

Ipatelski,

Bananas can work.

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Which is certainly true, though honestly I think as long as you can keep your greenhouse at zone 8-9 conditions during the winter you're still quite decent off. Your season would be greatly extended,...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

You can grow basjoo in zone 6 just fine (leave in ground and mulch heavily in the fall to protect overwinter) if you just want foliage (this produces seeded bananas and is 'ornamental').

Otherwise,...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Oh yeah, didn't fully catch the "warm" part. As many have stated before in this thread, which by the way is a great read, - It's best you keep it in a place under the high 50's and above the 30's....

Re: Pineapple Banana Is this a load or not?

The fruit that is displayed is either the fruit of the Monstera Deliciosa or, as near as I can tell, a fraud.

The fruit does have a taste like a combination of banana and pineapple.

This is the...

Re: Has anybody tried heaping soil over the P-stem to help them winter over? (Kansas)

Hi Terri,
I definately wouldn't cover the stem in soil unless you live in an extremely dry climate, but here in the UK where I am, it would certainly lead to rot. 2012 has been the wettest for 100...

Re: What is the coolest temperature before plant damage?

I'm no expert either, but the symptoms sure look like those you'd expect to see on a plant that hasn't bee "hardened off" before being placed inside. If the plant has been inside all winter, its...

I will just keep calling mine either "the yard" or "the garden". Knowing my city, as soon as I start throwing around "plantation" or "grove", it will be taken the wrong way and city code enforcement...

Re: How Many Banana Plants to make a Grove

Sunfish's link suggested you need enough to kill the grass due to the shade. I think four would do that if they are spaced properly. :)

So let's say four is a grove. Two groves makes a...

Re: What is the coolest temperature before plant damage?

It really depends on the cultivar. Some cultivars don't get leaf damage until frost is formed while others will show leaf damage as high as the 40s. I had two mystery bananas planted in the ground...
