Re: Hardening off potted bananas

Cincinnana, how long do you run the fan on them before you set the bananas out?

Re: Hardening off potted bananas

Oh, I live in Kansas. We tend to have wet, cool overcast springs that last 3-5 weeks, followed by sunshine and heat. Lots of heat.

Hardening off potted bananas

Last spring I spent 3 weeks carefully hardening off my Mekong Giant banana. It was overcast the entire time, which is common in my area. I worked the plant up to 6 hours a day.

Then the sun came out...

Re: How much fertilizer can a banana tree tolerate?

I used to have a Basjoo: I am thinking of getting another one once folks have pups to sell.

But, right now I have a Mekong Giant: as soon as the soil is warm enough I will fertilize.

How much fertilizer can a banana tree tolerate?

I have a Mekong Giant banana tree. Most yrs it grows about 8 feet tall in the summer, and then I bring a pup inside to plant out the next spring. Any Mekong Giant left outside will die during the...

Re: Had an idea about overwintering some bananas in pots and need some advice.

I let a few weeds seedlings grow in my potted banana. If the weeds look healthy in the winter I do not add much water. Though your bananas are larger than mine so they might be more "thirsty", and...

Re: Woud you separate the pup?

:2738:Well, the pup was potted up a few days ago and it is doing well enough: I think it will be fine. Yesterday I moved it to the garage and put a light on it.

I suspect the plant has lost some...

Re: Woud you separate the pup?

Well, it *IS* Fall, and a tree that gave broken shade *HAS * lost its leaves.

The yellowing may be due to both, though my gut tells me it is because it is Fall. My plant is less yellow than the ones...

Re: Woud you separate the pup?

Well, it is separated and potted and watered.

The pup did not have very many roots but what was there were big roots. I will keep it outside for a few days to try and diminish the shock: I have...

Re: Woud you separate the pup?

All right, then!

I will pot up the pup later today. Mulching the mother plant can wait for a bit: I can watch the weather and apply the mulch at the last possible moment so that a late warm spell...

Woud you separate the pup?

It is Fall here, and we will have a frost any week, now.

I was going to surround my Mekong Giant with a circle of woven wire and fill it with sawdust in a week or so to protect it for the winter,...

Re: What am I?

I do not think they are Basjoo: the leaves are too narrow.

Unfortunately I have no idea what it is!

Re: Basjoo pstem did not survive 1F with wrap

Obdiah, did your main stem receive no damage at all, or did it grow again from the base?

I usually use leaves, but it sawdust gives a P-stem that much protection, I am going to buy sawdust!

What do you do with so much fruit?

Fruit in the grocery stores go from green to ever ripe pretty quickly. With so much fruit on a stalk, what do you do with it all?

Re: Whats going on with this beefsteak tomato plant?

Exactly.

You cannot do this with brassicas, but tomatos simply do not care if you plant them deeply. In fact some people do it on purpose to make the root system deeper and get them of to a better...

Re: Whats going on with this beefsteak tomato plant?

Tomatos ADORE light! I start mine in a South facing window so that they get every BIT of the light available to them!

You can save the seedlings if you want to: give them light. Tomatos are one of...

Re: What is the best banana plant to grown in Kansas City?

Hello from across the river! I am in Kansas.

Musa Basjoo is the only type that I know *will* winter over: It does better if you heap leaves over it in the Fall but most years it will come back from...

I moved my banana plant outside, and now the leaves are yellowing!

I wintered a Mekong Giant banana pup inside in a 2 gallon pot. It was placed in a cool basement, under a light bulb, and only fertilized lightly.

It looked healthy and happy, though it only put out...

Re: First Time Basjoo growing questions

Here in Kansas, I did not do anything to amend my soil and my Basjoo did very well: it only died when it got to -20 and then the electric company parked their truck on it all of the next summer it...

Re: Basjoo pstem did not survive 1F with wrap

My Basjoo always did this: our winters go down to -3. I had been thinking about better ways to protect the P-stem when the power company killed it by parking their truck on top of it.

That is what...

Re: Banana Novice: Help! Raked back mulch - bare root!
