Re: How are blackberries grown?

Just a warning about Apache blackberries. They are very prone to UV damage. I have had Apaches for a few years, and whenever we get a heat wave (around 90° and above), the berries which are close...

Re: clay-is it bad?

I have bananas in heavy clay and they do great. The topsoil is about 1 1/2 feet deep and then there is a small layer of topsoil mixed into the clay, but the rest is dense clay. Just make sure that...

Re: Wollemi Pine

I have had two Wollemi pines for about 4 years. They seem to be very slow growers. The larger is only about 4 feet tall, but appears very healthy. In my climate they seem to only have one major...

Re: Siam Ruby, great indoor banana

The color is not as dark as it would be if it were outside, but it still has a green/dark red color to the leaves which is very attractive.

It is in a 10 gallon pot.

Siam Ruby, great indoor banana

I keep my bananas indoors in a wet lit room during the winter months and move them outside for the summer. While they do quite well, they typically appear a bit on the unhealthy side by the end of...

Re: tango mandarin

For those of you who are obsessive/compulsive like me, you should have noticed a very recent change in the availability of the aforementioned tango mandarin.

Re: tango mandarin

Yes I have been eagerly awaiting the Tango mandarin release from a retail source as well. Four winds says they should have trees available this summer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: tango mandarin

I'm confused, I just looked at the Four Winds website and they have 2-3 year old Gold Nugget trees listed as available for sale. I have two Gold Nugget trees that I bought from them last...

Re: almost fried my bananas...

Check out this site: World Climate (http://www.climate-charts.com/index.html)

One of the interesting data points it lists is the 50%/90% last frost dates.

For instance, in Novato where I live,...

Re: Coconut Mulch?

I use a coconut husk chip mix (2 parts CHC, 2 parts regular potting soil, 1 part perlite) on all of my plants with the exception of those which are very sensitive to salts (e.g. Japanese Maples). It...

Re: Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii

Welcome. Where exactly do you live on the Big Island? My absolutely favorite town is Hawi. We try to make it up there a couple of times a year. My father-in-law desperately wants to move to Hawi...

Re: subtropical papayas?

Nice looking plant with a really impressive cold tolerance. Is it also more resistant to the root issues other papayas can develop in wet cold weather. Where did you get it?

Re: Wanted: Coconut

I have seen many coconut fruits in Hawaii, but at the hotels and public places they are invariably removed when they are small so as not to later fall on people's heads.
