Re: Ice Age?
Joe, that would be the best thing that ever happened to the planet ;).
Has anyone seen the movie "The Day After Tomorrow?" - very cool (no pun intended) movie with a real accelerated Ice Age.

Re: Indoor bananas and bugs!
Sorry, my bad. :o NatureGard is the brand and it is Rotenone-Pyrethrin Spray. It's a concentrated suspension, actually, that you dilute to spray. It came with the house, along with a huge selection...

Re: Indoor bananas and bugs!
I don't know if my experience is typical or not, but I used a pyrethrin-based spray (Rootenone) for my citrus trees and every banana that got any on them got burned. Not sure if I just mixed it too...

"If you live in very cold areas and must leave your banana wrapped for extended periods."
I'm sorry, that just made me laugh out loud, does that make me a pervert?:ha:

Re: Bad News about Bananaplantation.biz
TDL,
Interesting.
I am curious now just what exactly their status is. Did "not Oliver" give a name or was it just someone answering the phone? I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I am not...

Re: Need suggestions on soil amendment
Anna, have your temps gotten into the 40s yet? Ours have and i'm getting the same yellowing leaves (just the lowest, oldest ones) on the outside plants. However, that sure wouldn't cause rot.
Is it...

Bad News about Bananaplantation.biz
Well, after waiting a while to hear from Oliver about my latest order, I called.
The news is bad. Wilma apparently devastated their plants and whole operation and they are out of business until...

Re: Anyone growing Rhubarb?
Mike,
I wanted to grow some just for the gorgeous huge leaves for hypertufa molding. Unfortunately, I found out it's too cold in the deep south for it.:(

Re: Hi Tech Heating
Dang, I'm probably working too hard. I've got mine keeping at about 55. Course that's the dome greenhouse with a 1500W heater. But I don't just want them to survive the winter ... I want growth too!:p

Re: Hi Tech Heating
SG,
Man you really McGuyvered that one, LOL! I agree, if it works - who cares what it looks like. This ain't no beauty contest ... well, except for the plants themselves of course!

Re: Preparing Ensete Maurelli for the winter
I think the strategy is to cut down to the corm, then divide the corm and each piece will (hopefully) grow a new plant.
Unfortunately, I drilled extra drainage holes in the 18" pots they are in so...

Re: Preparing Ensete Maurelli for the winter
Mike,
Technically, we are Zone 8, but I have had local people tell me we are really Zone 8B-9. We will get below freezing at some point though probably not until January. I just hate to lose the...

Preparing Ensete Maurelli for the winter
OK, the weather is getting cooler at night (forecast high 40s coming fast) and I am wondering what to do with my two Ensete Ventricosum Maurelli in pots. They are better than 8 feet tall (leaves up)...

If you mean Musella Lasiocarpa, this is from bananaplantation.biz:
Musella is endemic to South West Yunnan and the places it grows are high mountains where winters can be quite frosty.

Re: Pronunciation of 'Musa'
I think Bah-zoo sounds cooler as in: "I've got Basjoo out the wazoo!"
But if it was Bah-jou, you could have the culinary delight "Basjoo Au Jus!"
:ha:
Ok, ok, back to my cave.

Re: Ant Hill on Mound
Water. Lots of it. They will move, then you can poison the new mound. I have had really good luck with the Bayer ant killer dust. It only takes a little bit per mound.
Also, Rotenone (pyrethrins)...

Re: Pronunciation of 'Musa'
If you pronounce it as a Latin word, it would be Moo-Sa. However, just about everybody I have heard say it, say Myou-Sa.
Here's a better one I posted some time back on the "other" forum.
"Is it...
