Re: For Northern basjoo growers

NE Iowa here, borderline zone 4/5. My basjoos are still under protection but planning to unwrap tomorrow! I buried about 12-18 inches of pseudstem under straw bales and leaf mold. The plant is...

Re: Storing/transporting banana leaves

Wow. That's what I ended up doing for the friend delivery. Amazed that they can last a month this way!

Hi all, I've got a couple questions regarding banana leaves to be used for cooking.

(1) i'd like to take some leaves to a friend this weekend, but I'll be departing home on Thursday and not seeing...

Re: HELP: Growth Slowing Problem

25-30 feet in the midwest in a single growing season? That's HUGE! What are your techniques? Mine, fed by fish emulsion, are lucky to hit 10 feet with the leaves standing straight up by the end of...

Re: Best bananas to dig each winter in the north

That's very similar to how I protected my basjoo the year before last. What part of Illinois are you in? There's a big difference in winters between Rockford and Cairo.

Re: Best bananas to dig each winter in the north

Don't say that just yet ... I'm still hoping to enjoy this year's garden another six weeks! Feels like it's just coming into its prime now.

Re: Best bananas to dig each winter in the north

Following up ... any thoughts on standard vs. dwarf Orinoco? Good sources? I see that Going Bananas has the dwarf. I am a fan of large plants, but I can imagine hauling and storage might be an issue...

Re: Best bananas to dig each winter in the north

Thanks for all of the great feedback so far. With a clear consensus on Orinoco it sounds like that's a definite direction for next year. I actually did have a Veinte Cohol when I lived in Kansas, and...

Re: Water Soluble Banana Fuel Dosages

Many thanks to Richard and others for this great thread.

I have a couple of questions that I haven't found answers to:

I see various references to the annual amount of fertilizer that bananas can...

Greetings from northern Iowa

I've been interested in bananas for several years, since learning that Musa basjoo could possibly survive in the midwestern locales I've called home. I started out growing it in northeast Kansas,...
