Your plants are "abandoning" that larger stem due to some kind of damage or problem. Either you squeezed it too hard or it became broken inside when you were handling them, or the old stem got...

I am no expert, but it looks to me that the mother pstem has been abandoned by the corm and is pushing out a new pstem.
My guess (it is hard to tell from the photos - they are blurry on my machine...

The Indian superbum is fairly easy from seed. I'd reccommend trying from seed since they are neary impossible to find as a plant, and the few times I have seen them they have been spendy. Rare palm...
