Re: Looking for Musa Velutina, Dwarf Orinoco, and Dwarf Brazilian

I have your Dwarf Brazilian ready for pickup. You have visited us once before.
One plant is coming up with an inflorescence right now, so you will get an idea of the fruiting height when you see it.

Re: Bananas in my garden

It probably depends on the environment. I have just measured my two fruiting plants because of this discussion. Both have fruit bunches at 14' growing.
The Pisang Ceylon mat inland at my horse barn...

Re: Banana nectar?

I was talking about velutina doesn't produce an actual liquid nectar! It's flower makes a powder on and around the flowers. I would get lots and lots of velutina bananas.

I only have 1 velutina...

Re: Banana nectar?

Orinoco is great! Sweet! However do not taste the fluid (sap) from the p-stem. Very nasty. I had heard that you can hollow out a stem to collect water to drink in a survival situation. Having tasted...

Re: Bananas in my garden

I had no idea what he was ranting about. Seemed out of line. Tons of people grow in pots. When I lived at the trailer park I grew in the woods. We grow banana plants all the time in Florida in the...

Re: Banana nectar?

I love it! I'm out there all the time fighting wasps and bees for it! It tastes about the same on different varieties to me.

The only one that I've flowered and doesn't produce it is the velutinas!...

Re: variation in cavendish?

Yes! 100% certain both are cavendish! The fruit color would also be different on the Musa Ninos (ladyfinger) it would be a deep yellow off color. You would notice. Also way sweeter! They are called...

Re: Bananas in my garden

Trevor Hoffman lives in that area!

Yes, up on the bluff the climate is ok but down in the canyons small thin crusts of ice can form in the winter.

Do you have a yard for growing plants or are you...

Re: variation in cavendish?

I eat roughly 5 or 6 bananas a day. I buy Dole, Delmonte, but prefer Chiquita. I see no need for context in the provided photo because it easily represents the variations of cavendish that I get on a...

Re: variation in cavendish?

That is absurd to say most of the minis are cavendish. They are either Monzano or Sucrier and neither are cavendish. The cavendish subgroup are of the AAA genome. Delmonte by their own admission...

The size does!! But both are for sure cavendish. Ninos aren't that curved. I have seen some insanely large bananas in the grocery store!

Re: variation in cavendish?

Cavendish in general can be very long. They traditionally used a rule of size. Bananas over and bananas under go to fertilizer and fodder. Recently Amigo and Delmonte seem to using the odd bunches...

Re: variation in cavendish?

I would guess there are many factors.

Bunch pruning?
Hand location on the bunch?
Farmer practices?
Fertilizer/water?
Genetics?
Growing location?
Soil?

Re: Best potting mix for containers

Use a low cost potting mix from your local garden center or a discount store. What ever is cheap! Add to it 1/3 to 1/2 perlite for bananas. Or use sand instead of perlite; but sand will add extra...

Re: Too funny (or sad) not to share

Yes, I noticed they did after I had pointed it out in a response to their add. At least they were willing to correct the mistake and I appreciate that with a good Craig's List seller.
