Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
I will say that i wrapped some of my plants with heavy sheet plastic and it worked, however you have to be careful to leave an opening on top for condensation and airflow.. and never wrap tight to...

And I can definitely see how this hobby just...

Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. That is essentially what I do with the addition of a cover to keep it dry because we are so wet here all winter. Only one of my HH plants barely survived last...

Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
I just use the inexpensive little lights and run them until it gets above freezing. If it’s going to be below about 25, I have heating cables that are manufactured for people in the northern climates...

Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
I think we did a thread on this topic last year.. not sure the title however. I purchased a huge roll of frost cloth from amazon, and simply wrapped the pstems in that. I had christmas lights on some...

Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
I'm also in zone 9 but on the coast. Last year we had a few days at 19 degrees and my plant just started with a couple of pups that are about 9 inches tall. Can anyone tell me what I should do with...

Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
Those two bananas are pretty cold tolerant. The pstems will be viable down to 30. Below that, I break the leaves and fold them against the pstem. I wrap the entire pstem with folded leaves from...

Re: Best winterization method for Zone 9?
Last year Up here in Savannah I did nothing for my basjoo plants and the p stems all survived. I think we have some Orinocos around in the neighborhood and those p stems all survived as well.
What...

Re: Ensete Banana Questions
Holy cr*p they really are huge! Now THAT's a giant herb!
The leaves are enormous and the p-stems are massive!! Amazing!
It looks like something you would imagine in prehistoric times

California Gold is Adorable
It actually looks like a miniature version of a tall banana plant.
It retains the proportions while being short & stubby.
Mine reached 'max' height quickly. The P-stem is a little over 3ft & to the...

Re: Which fertilizer is best for bananas?
My banana plants are approximately 5' apart so I spread in a circle from the pstem to 2.5' which is the midpoint betweeen the plants. I don't pile it right around the pstem but spread it out. I might...

My best local supply store is Ewing Irrigation and Landscape Supply. They have one near you in Friendswood. Some years I have had to order the SOP from an Internet supplier.

Re: Which fertilizer is best for bananas?
I don't mix the fertilizers. I measure out and apply the urea to all the plants and then do the same thing with the MOP/SOP. I only apply the SA Minors in the beginning of the season. Then water...

Re: Which fertilizer is best for bananas?
I use a similar fertilizer method as Art and Zallin which has me juggling three bags of fertilizer (Urea, MOP/SOP, Southern AG Minor Elements) for the season however there were a couple years that I...
