I'm agree ... the pstem shows a dark bruise. Cut just below the bruise. Then slice open the section removed to see if the is any obvious cause for the problem. There should be some center...

from the picture, the pstem looks a little less than "perfect" colour. Edwmax what do you think? The center does not look like the centers of those we cut back - ours are a little whiter. Not sure...

That could be sun burn. But generally rot on the pstem is due to a problem within the pstem ( burrowing insect) or progressing rot in the corm causing the pstem to slowly die back.

Pix would help. Anything that is brown and mushy needs to be cut off or it will spread.
