Judging from your photos it seems to me to be a spurt of growth from bringing the plants to more desirable conditions.
They were kept in a cool basement for a period of time which changes the growth...

My thoughts on the choking - too much phosphorus. Also when cigar leaves start growing out of the pstem too fast and tangle - probably need to back off on fertilizer.

When mine (Orinoco) go in the ground in the spring I cut the top off. Then watch for growth, if the leaf stops coming out I cut more off (5 or 6 inches) and watch for growth. Repeat as needed,...

I've had a couple super dwarf banana plants choke while the flower is coming up. The way you can see it is when the leaves are not coming out all the way. The next leaf comes out before the other...
