I am in 9a and have had DC for many years but they never do much in the ground. They struggled even on the best years. Don't waste your time, I just dug them up and making room for other stuff.

If you truly in zone 9a then every winter you have sustained temperatures between -4C and -7C. If this is the case then Dwarf Cavendish will not survive the winter.

By the way, Musa acuminata produces a seeded, inedible fruit. In your location you could grow the edible unseeded banana "Namwa". I have some pups available if you don't mind driving to Vista...

By definition, it freezes in zone 9. Note the definition pertains to 10 year averages of low temperatures. Note also that USDA maps do not account for micro-climates and local variations.

I live in zone 9B and we had 2 nights this winter get down to 26-27 degrees... Looks like possible frost tonight... Mid March frost in Florida, again this year.
