Smile Re: Wintering Musa Basjoo by only covering with topsoil?

It will work.

Topsoil /mulch do the same thing as an insulator. for plants and bulbs.
Bagged mulch might be more pleasing to look at.
You should have no issues in zone 7.

Go ahead and pile it...

Smile Re: My Musa basjoo is flowering.. will it die?

Re: My Musa basjoo is flowering.. will it die?

Yep, cut it off if it is unsightly but do not dig. All of your bananas are connected to an underground corm and you will kill all of them if you dig it up.

Re: My Musa basjoo is flowering.. will it die?

The main stem slowly dies after the fruit is the harvested. But, the corm should produce new pups. Actually, you should already have a large pup growing from last year which should bear next...

They old dies months after and turns to soil. Just leave it and remove only the dead above ground that is unsightly.

Re: Musa Basjoo out for winter and too much rain?

Hi Lovetogarden,

If it is in the ground, you should be fine as long as the soil drains and doesn't hold water for a long time.

If its in a pot, I would move it under an awning or something to get...

Re: Musa Basjoo winter dig up or not?

Keep the plants in the ground....if mature.
But if they are small you might bring them in for their first year to overwinter .

Mulch heavily with whatever you can afford, it doesn't matter what you...

Sounds good! Have fun.

In another year, you will have extra pups to either give away or sacrifice with winter hardiness tests :08:

Re: Musa Basjoo winter dig up or not?

Hi there

I did a comparison a few years ago with 2 basjoos of similar size. One was chopped down to the ground for winter and the other stalk was kept about 4' tall and wrapped in attic insulation....

Re: Systemic insecticide by bayer safe to use on musa?

If it is labeled for garden and vegetable use, it should be. Look at your label.

Bayer has several different systemic mixtures available, some NOT for use on eatable crops.
