I never found issue with removing suckers to think of another tool. I use a sharpened heavy stone shovel and it gets the job done smoothly.

Absolutely it can! We have about 10-15 of those flowering now 35 miles northeast of Atlanta on the border of 7b and 8a. They grow like weeds and survive the winter with just light mulch/pine straw....
