Perlite is quite fragile and crumbles easily. Presumably under prolonged pressure it would eventually become a mass of fine particles.

Thanks for the tips on your methods. Had to look up lechuza basicpon. The price on line was around $14.00 but it looks like good stuff. I will look for a close supplier but have never seen it before....
