Re: First Bananas! Ottawa, Canada

No, I didn't do anything different. I think it was just ready!

It lives in a pot that comes into my plant room for the winter and outside for the summer.

Party First Bananas! Ottawa, Canada

Hey everyone,

I've finally got bananas! I've had this mat of Dwarf Orinoco for 8 years or so and have had 2 blooms previously, but both were naked. Third time's the charm! When it eventually...

Re: My first inflorescence! Dwarf Orinoco, Zone 5, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

They are currently in my plant room in the basement with a bunch of LEDs. Trying to keep the spider mites at bay!

I've currently got the dwarf orinocos, musa basjoo, dwarf cavendish, musa "truly...

Joy My first inflorescence! Dwarf Orinoco, Zone 5, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

:woohoonaner:

It's finally happening! I've been growing bananas for around 10 years now, knowing that it would be a challenge to get a flower, but the hard work is paying off.

I purchased this...

Re: Southern Ontario members?

I'm the Ottawa guy with the ice cream banana. I moved last year, so I have been in transition, but I've got a much bigger space for my addiction hobby now. My current plant situation is a basjoo that...

Re: What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

Thanks for the suggestion, I have one already and will consider it for next year. Too late for this year, as it's now sealed up tight. I wonder if these controllers would work for heating cable, or...

Re: What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

Yeah, turns out it's definitely not a basjoo. After doing some research, I'm quite certain that it's an Ice Cream, especially considering the waxy PS and red PS base. Does everyone concur?

Anyway,...

Re: Ensete Ventricosum overwintering.....

You can cut them off or leave them on, either way. The roots won't survive through the winter anyway as they will just dry up, so you can do whatever is easiest for you.

Re: My Canadian Bananas and Tropicals

Hopefully those basjoos bounce back. They're pretty remarkable things so nothing would surprise me. Just to give you an idea of what might have been going on in there, I had a first year plant with a...

Re: My Canadian Bananas and Tropicals

Thanks for posting all your plants, Brady. It's nice to see other Ontarians here who are just as crazy as I am. I'm in Ottawa.

I've been growing musa basjoo, musa zebrina, pineapples, citrus,...

Re: What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

It's funny, I actually planned it out so the dryer vent would be my secret weapon in a deep freeze. The box actually has a hole in the side that fits snuggly over the dryer vent. However, I'm not...

Re: What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

I've actually got two thermometers in there already. One wired and one wireless. I can't stop staring at them! I've found that if the outside temperature is around 0c, the internal temperature is...

Re: What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

The link on the Quats seems to be no longer existent, but I did a quick search and I never realized that they were that hardy!

When you grow them from seed, will they still bear fruit, or is the...

Re: What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

Thanks Olaf.

Yes, the sides are held together with all-weather caulking, and now that the cold weather is upon us, the top is also caulked on (but I would be able to pop it off in the early spring...

What do you think of my overwintering method so far? Ottawa, ON

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to share with you my first attempt at overwintering my basjoo. It's a first-year plant that put on a terrific amount of growth this past summer. It was planted in mid...
