Re: Blue Java x Namwah growth, first post.

Wholeheartedly agree on the company being incorrect on the plant's info. Blue Java and Namwa are indeed hybrids, but of the ancestral species M. acuminata and M. balbisiana, and would be referred to...

Re: Orito banana plant

FYI, Orito = Sucrier = Nino. Different names for the same variety, might help with finding one. There might be minor differences, but how they're raised affects the final result more than which...

Re: Blue Java x Namwah growth, first post.

If it isn't dead or stalled, that's a job well done.

I'm doubtful that they sold you a Blue Java x Namwa hybrid, but hopefully it'll still satisfy the senses. Banana plants can't really be grafted...

Re: Is this a flag?

Assuming no major changes have been done to the growing conditions, that looks like a flag leaf.

Extra info (just for fun), it's the plant gradually changing its leaves from vegetative to flowering...

Re: Looking for Dwarf Brazilian for SF Bay Area, CA

I've got a banana plant that's maybe a Pome Subgroup cultivar. Can't guarantee it's identity as I haven't fruited it personally, but I've seen a video of the parent mat I'm told it came from.

If...

Re: Growing blue java (ice cream) in zone 8a (AL)

1. Best bet on getting Blue Java is to buy it from a trusted source, some forum members occasionally put them up for sale. Namwa is frequently mislabeled and sold as Blue Java, even by big companies....

Re: slow or no loading of site?

It might have something to do with the old webpage architecture the site was built with. A lot of long-standing webpages have unoptimized modules/coding that can make modern browsers choke. Still has...

Re: Dwarf Namwah Deformed Leaves

Looks like primarily a calcium/boron deficiency:

Usually dolomite lime (or an equivalent) plus a small amount of regular borax...

Can try, but I do wanna caveat that I am not as experienced as some of the senior members. Hopefully one of them pops in to confirm or correct any errors I make.

Assuming they show in the same order...

Re: Baby bananas for chiquita brand!

Found an old forum post that addressed this:
http://www.bananas.org/f12/dominico-bananas-9868.html#post101754

Ladyfinger is a catch-all name for several smallish but unrelated bananas, not any...

Re: I.D. from flower

Okay, I'm reasonably certain this is a Cavendish type, and I'll walk through my thought process.

There are multiple types called ladyfingers, the most common of those being:
Sucrier
Namwa (I...

Re: ISO Zone 9b seeds

Seeds from edible bananas aren't very common, but there are some boutique growers that have hand pollinated edible bananas for seed. PR-Giants comes to mind, they sometimes put some seeds from...

Re: Mystery bananas flowering

I'm far less versed in the cultivation of bananas, so hopefully someone else can chime in here. As to whether to lop off the flower, it sounds reasonable enough to do. Probably leave the leaves to...

Re: Mystery bananas flowering

Weird that this one doesn't have any fruit on it, but #2 is definitely an Orinoco/Bluggoe.

Because Orinoco bananas are so widespread and easy to grow, there's been many random mutations that...

Yep, congrats on the fruit you're about to get! If you can get more pictures as the bunch and flowers develop, folks here can help ID the banana. Don't cut off the male bud before getting pictures...

Re: Red and White Iholena - Tissue cultured from Iholena Lele

I actually have an ongoing research project on this exact matter! There's certainly some probability that some Red and White Iholena/Iholene (misspelling from the mainland) are tissue cultured...

Re: Lady Finger or Cavendish?

There's no specific "ladyfinger"/"Lady Finger" cultivar; plants from the Sucrier and Mysore subgroups have been referred to by that name, and Pome subgroup cultivars are also called ladyfingers in...

Re: Can you tell me about these seeds?

Musa thomsonii is a wild seeded species. It's briefly covered in Gabe's latest publication: https://www.musalit.org/seeMore.php?id=21272

Ensete glaucum isn't a true banana, but Ensete and Musa (the...

Re: dwarf ducasse black stuff on leaves

Probably sooty mold, feeding off the sugary residue the bugs excrete when feeding. Deal with the bugs and the mold should hopefully resolve itself over time....

The picture used by the seller does seem to be a bunch from the "Red" subgroup, but those are generally seedless unless someone is going out of their way to breed them. There's also a red flag that...
