Your worst enemy is moisture getting into the stub and freezing. However, I've found that even if the main plant gets killed, it will usually send up pups as soon as the ground warms in the spring.

Oh yes, she does send a great package. I ordered from her in the past and was very satisfied with what she sent. I got a full box with nice size, healthy plants.

If it were me, I'd set up that cage and fill with the pine straw. What have you to loose? Best thing about doing that is, you'll be able to sleep better on those few cold nights of below freezing...

I'd hold back on any fertilizer4 till it starts growing again. Also, don't over water it or the roots could rot. Did you get some cuttings from it?
