Re: New to Banana's

Welcome! Being in a similar zone (8a/7b line, north of Atlanta) I would recommend trying to find accurate plants if you can. Coming out of my first year experimenting with overwintering bananas, I've...

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

[QUOTE=Pancrazio;284285]I see what you mean. Acute and extended damage are definitively two different things. I think that the key point is to have at least some daily temperature above 32F. I think...

Re: What type of blade do you use?

I have a big plastic serrated knife designed to cut tomatoes. It saws right through a big fat stem. Was very helpful when cutting down stems after winter to "find the green."

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

I completely agree. I left some out this winter as sort of an experiment - I wrapped and bundled three six-foot trees to see what would happen. Our lowest low was 17, but we got extended periods...

Re: Newbie.

Welcome! I'm jealous of your Florida garden. Hoping to move down there in a year or two. Heads up - I feel like I've been spreading the word lately on this company, but I had bad experiences with my...

Re: Edible variegated red banana?

Haha, yes you will! It's nothing like those. I eat those as well, but these seeded bananas aren't like that...way more seedy. And the seeds will crack your teeth. But you can try if you want - I had...

Re: Edible variegated red banana?

I grow velutina. They are stunning - my flower and fruit at 4-5 feet in just a few months - here cold kills them to the ground but they will grow up in the spring and fruit by August. The fruit is...

Re: ceylon banana

This nursery sells healthy plants, but they are not correctly labeled. I bought three bananas from them awhile back, and all three grew out to be wrong. The 'California gold' was obviously a dwarf...

Re: Florida Orinoco history ???

Orinoco is from Venezuela, so I would assume they came with cross-Caribbean trade and migration, and since they are well suited to floridas climate they stick around a lot longer and with less care...

Re: Wanting Dwarf Brazilian

I got mine from a forum member, merce3...reasonable price, sturdy plant. It is growing out nicely from winter storage. I would recommend.

Re: Few different types (ice cream, ele ele, dwarf brazilian)

I got a great dwarf Brazilian from him last year. Over wintered in a cold garage excellently and is now waking up quickly for spring. Great plant!!

Re: Chima Meta Chimera

That nursery is reaaaaaaally dodgy. You can order those, but you'll never be sure what you actually got.

Re: Notice Regarding Spam Posts

Thanks, everyone. I don't post much here because I really don't know enough to have much to say, but I'm definitely an avid reader, and the forum has allowed my banana gardening to go from a naive,...

Re: Fake Ice Cream, Fake California Gold:show us your TC Bananas!

My "Cali gold" from green earth turned out to obviously be a dwarf cavendish. I also ordered an "Apple" from them that turned out to have red leaves, and a "gold finger" that ended up being a super...

Re: The jungle 2016

I think it'll look great. I think the thin green needles of the cypress will be a great contrast to banana leaves - you don't want it all the same, just like any design. I also say plant what you...

Re: Soloman Islands bananas

This all makes me so jealous! Clearly I picked the wrong masters degree. I want to study bananas in the Pacific. Like, right now.

Re: Looking for new Cold tolerant bananas

Well, we will see. This is the first winter I'm pulling them through, so I won't know for sure until I see new leaves in April. Some of them have been brought indoors, some of them are in cool...

Re: Florida Hill strikes again!

I love the plants I got from green earth because they are quality from the price - but I'm already discovering the Cali Gold is not that, and is probably not even an Orinoco - it's growing like dwarf...

Re: Great people to do business with...

Yes, it's probably very different being in Florida, and I didn't think about that... you guys seem to have a lot of good stuff close by. I always try to stop somewhere when I'm down there. Up here we...

Re: Bunchy top or another virus?

My velutina and enano Gigante did that as well this spring, when we had a sudden cold snap (up here we call it a "Blackberry winter" - opposite of an Indian summer). I supposed it to be a jolt from...

Re: Great people to do business with...

In their defense, their plants are huge. $10 was a great price for it - other nurseries charge three times that, without shipping. I just got an amazing raja puri plant from them. The pstem was...

Re: School Wants Banana Plant for Greenhouse

This company has some Viente Cohol pups (and other hardy varieties) available. I just got a huge Rajapuri for $10 + shipping and it was a large healthy plant! and pretty incredible for the price....
