Re: Who is still here?

:03: :waving:

Hi again from San Diego.

We had some really rough winters the past three or four years and I lost most of my banana plants. Very discouraged.
Checked bananas.org every now and then,...

We love PL… (PL Seafood today, lol), but live in Bay Park.
Yes, that is a Blue Java in my Avatar picture.

Re: How tall does the pups need be before you cut them off

Welcome to bananas.org. The "search" function in this forum will give you a lot of good information from some very experienced banana plant growers. Assuming you want to keep the pups (otherwise you...

Re: Grow More Fruit Fuel Fertilizer dosage

Nothing fancy, just don’t mulch all the way to the stem.

Re: Grow More Fruit Fuel Fertilizer dosage

Splitting it up is one solution. My banana plants are not on a level patch either. Our soil is rock hard and needs tons of amendments, usually loads of compost covered with a thick layer of mulch....

Re: So much rain

We could use some too. Northern California has already limited the water usage to 59 Gallons per person/day.
This would not be good for all my plants.

Re: New leaf coming out weird. Not unraveling correctly

It will sort itself out, probably just fine. Is it possible that you may have fertilized recently and the new leaf behind the one in question is growing faster than the one in question can straighten?

Re: Grow More Fruit Fuel Fertilizer dosage

3/4 cup diluted in a 5 Gallon bucket of water applied once every month to established plants in the ground.
Smaller or potted plants I use a tablespoon per Gallon of water.

Re: So much rain

What makes you think that they are too wet? What is your soil? Amendments? Banana plants love the rain. In the tropics it rains every day too.....
You should always have good drainage around your...

Re: How loose/tight do you leave your soil (in ground)

No pruning of leaves unless they are brown or dead. Banana plants are not like palm trees. Leaves are needed for photosynthesis and development of a strong plant, inflorescence and fruit bunch.

Re: What Soil and Fertilizer is best for planting Bananas?

I would not use dyed mulch for edibles. Check out “Chipdrop” in your area.
Or does your city have a green waste program? We can get free compost and mulch from the city and it is better quality then...

Re: What Soil and Fertilizer is best for planting Bananas?

I don’t know your microclimate, but assume you will be fine without cutting and winterizing the pseudostem.
Probably you will have a bunch of pups before the winter. A thought is to pot those up as...

Re: Need help with my banana

The newest leaves look fine. Especially at this size it is normal for the older leaves to die off.

Re: What Soil and Fertilizer is best for planting Bananas?

Plant in the ground and amend with lots of compost, then mulch. How cold do your winters get? Perhaps you can get away with covering your in ground plants with Agribon frost cloth.
I exclusively use...

Re: Newbie looking for guidance for 1st plant :-)

If I could only grow one banana, it would definitely be the Namwah (prolific grower and producer, delicious fruits). Second would be a variety out of the Mysore subgroup like Pisang Klotek or Pisang...

Re: Is this really a Patupi?

Does not look like my Patupi which is all green. Your plant reminds me of a variety in the Mysore subgroup because of all the maroon coloring.

Welcome to bananas.org neighbor. If you plan on moving this year, plant in a big pot or growing bag. Otherwise banana plants grow fast here in San Diego when planted in the ground and develop pups...
