Re: I can't nail this one down.

Maybe a basjoo / sikkimensis Bengal Tiger hybrid? I don't have any knowledge of how that process would work. Glad you where there to pick one up.

Re: I can't nail this one down.

They're out at Paradise Plants north on the 19A at Hardy Rd. You may know them. I spoke to Casandra there and explained our findings on the forum.

I have noticed the leaves are getting glossy on the...

Re: I can't nail this one down.

I'm wondering how consistent the variegation will be with this one?

Re: I can't nail this one down.

Indeed. We'll have to get in touch in the near future and compare notes. I tried changing my location on my profile. Both times it has failed.

Pay no attention to the price tag. More info on these by the upcoming weekend.

Re: I can't nail this one down.

Interesting. Maybe sikkimensis matures and develops different characteristics than what is seen here. It definitely doesn't look like the large sikkimensis I saw in Chemainus some years ago. I did...

Re: I can't nail this one down.

I should update my location status on the forum. I'm also now in Courtenay and will change that after this post. I have seen sikkemensis growing in friends gardens a number of years ago. The leaves...

Re: I can't nail this one down.

I spoke with the owner at length about what she had. I mentioned that as long as M basjoo has been available, I have never seen red striping on the leaves like that. There was one specimen amongst...

I can't nail this one down.

This one is streaked with variegation not splotched like some varieties.
Zebrina, young acuminata, sumatrana, or something else? Thanks in advance.

Re: Coming back from the dead :)

Wow ... not quite so bad over my way this past winter but a couple of nights dropping to -7°C / 19°F. All the large pseudostems on my basjoo froze down of course without protection. They must have...

My driving skills while backing up, are as good or better than many pulling straight in to a parking stall. If I'd ever need a battery boost, the engine bay is facing forward and easily accessable by...

Re: is this s a pup guys

You should have a clear indication within a few weeks. In the mean time, leave it alone aside from watering as needed. More pics por favor when this starts to flush.

Cheers, Barrie.

Re: Forcing A Bloom

FYI ... I've managed to winter Musa velutina by bringing it in on the few nights where temps dip to around 3ºC (37.4ºF). It's a relatively small sized banana plant so quite managable. I wasn't really...

Re: Protecting in-ground banana plants from cold?

Jeff,
From your original post, it would seem like you want fruit.
Cutting the tops down could potentially stop or certainly reduce fruit production since the reproductive/flowering parts could be...

Re: How many pups can typically grow?

A large root mass and subsequent grouping will survive a much colder winter unprotected, than one that has regularly had it's off-sets removed.

Cheers, Barrie.

Re: Remove the mush or not

I actually leave any of the decaying matter but only at ground level such as old stumps etc (not up the pseudostems). I figure that it's a source of nutrients as it decomposes.

Cheers, Barrie.

Re: i just killed my musa basjoos i know i did!!! :(

I thought that was a very serious and legitimate question, and not a "sarcastic responce" ... or maybe it was. Hard to tell with all the dancing bananas.

For future reference, a few drops of dish...

Re: A touch of rot

I get 34" of rain anually, mainly in the winter months. Rot? Never. Big healthy strong vigorous basjoo bananas. I have to water routinely in the summer months to help with the growth.

Cheers,...
