Re: Thai Giant Pics
Incredible! I've been wanting to grow these since I first saw photos of them. Really freak passer-by's with this and Gunnera manicata.

Re: New and panicking with a musa velutina
Welcome! From what I have seen, Velutina can take as short as 2 months from flower to ripe fruit. I'd bring yours in if I were you though. The season at least for me is closing in soon and too soon...

Re: Tomatoes
If you're asking everyone, then yes. Mine always grow nice and produced very heavily. I like them, but sometimes find them to be too sweet for a purple tomato and most of the time prefer others like...

Re: New to Forum
All bananas bloom, drop flowers, and only produce a set amount of hands. Some very little, some moderate, some heavy production. All lose a lot of what looked to be young bananas but are just male...

Re: Library Kid's introduction
Welcome! I myself ironically don't have Mekong Giant or Basjoo though they should do excellent out here, but I do have a good sized collection of non-ornamentals :D

Re: Tomatoes
With there being so many different varieties, flavors, textures, - No such thing as the best. I myself agree with a lot of heirloom growers in saying "depends on my mood." I love sweet Pineapples and...

Re: banana plants all dying
Agreed with above. Way too hot, likely way too dry of air, and when it comes to that much heat bananas really do need a lot of water. Sounds like a lot of extremes and stress.

Re: A good day to buy plants :)
Congrats!! Sad for him indeed but great find! I only wish to meet another fellow tropical-in-a-nontropical grower. Good luck with those! The Carambola/Starfruit looks pretty well sized. Did he know...

Re: dwarf cavendish help (first thread!)
From my experience and opinion, cold hardy usually refers to bananas who's corm and p-stem can tolerant temperatures in the high 20's for brief to moderate periods of time.
Agreed with the rest...

Hello and welcome! I'm sure we all are, I know I am, excited and pleased to help anyone in need, especially who lives in a non-tropical environment. :)
The basics to banana growing to me, especially...

Re: Should I plant this here?
Yikes. I wouldn't plant anything water-hungry anywhere near any sort of water-based piping, whether it be sprinkler, septic, plumbing, etc.
If I were you, which I'm personally doing anyway, I'd keep...

Re: Bananas to you, from JERICO!
Thousand Fingers is extremely cold tolerant, the issue is in the fruit. The plant loves lots of heat, but more importantly, the many many fruits take a long, long time to develop. We're talking much...

Re: Bananas to you, from JERICO!
If you feel determined and crazy enough, you could try building a quick little temporary greenhouse over it for the winter so you can possibly get fruit. Get a wood frame going on the bottom, perhaps...

Re: Bananas to you, from JERICO!
Welcome! Always happy to see more zone pushers :)
Are your blooming ones in pots or greenhouses? With fall approaching and banana fruit ripening times rather long and slow, I'd highly recommend you...

Re: Which plant to choose?
If you get an Ice Cream, good luck on the search - Most end up the Namwah variety actually, but Namwahs are excellent!
What zone are you in? Do you plan to keep it outdoors all year?

Re: Beans as ground cover?
Nice! I thought I was the only one who likes 'em raw. :D Personally my favorite raw variety to try, plus they're gorgeous, are Dragon Tongue. They don't have as much "green" taste than others for...

Re: Beans as ground cover?
If I were you I'd still let them climb obstacles here and there though. But remember, when happy they really will over-take things. And faster than you think. But, the reward is some of those...

Re: Beans as ground cover?
They do not rot, they do not root, and they still produce well. I haven't compared between growing upright, though, but I'm pleased with how it goes. As long as you check on them and make sure...

Re: cavendish
That's a super dwarf cavendish. They'll always stay rather tiny in size and for fruit, are pretty picky with temps and take a long time. I find those even way up here in the Pacific Northwest sold as...

Re: Beans as ground cover?
Generally, yes. My greenhouse, which is kind of like FL (extreme humidity, temps in the 80-100 degrees) has loads of beans in it and many when they can't find something to climb will simply form...

Re: Mystery Banana
When bananas are measured, most of the time it is the P-stem. I'd love to know what Thai black fruit look like though. When the time comes.
