Sharonii typically has 4 to 6 brachts. It's a rather sensitive one; subject to root rot. Am I reading your home state right, Winconsin? You have a big challenge growing those heliconia there. I hope you have a greenhouse and large 25 gallon pots because the Caribaeas and Bihai are large growers. Firebird is a medium sized heliconia and easier to grow in a container. Even here along the Gulf Coast, they have to be overwintered in a greenhouse as the loss of humidity and the cooler temps from Dec. to Feb. do them in. Good luck.

Underside of leaves are maroon. Every heliconia in existence is a zone 10 plant except Scheideana. It comes back every year from a freeze but only blooms on second year growth so bloom only show up every few years after a mild winter. all of my heliconia are container grown and live in my greenhouse for the winter.

Nice, I've never tried growing them before. You got quite a selection of plants there, Steve. Smile

Thank you Dean. It helps occupy my time when I'm not duck hunting or fishing. The wife helps out also.
