Hello, my name is Gerry Glenn Jones and I am a writer and actor. I am also a lover of tropical plants, but I live in Tennessee and am limited to what I can grow outside. I have been growing banana plants for about 10 years, and have always cut them down in the fall and mulched them. However, in 2012 I decided to leave one plant standing. I cut all the leaves off, but did nothing to protect it. It turned black during the winter, but when spring arrived it began to green up again. It did not grow any leaves, but instead, grew an inflorescence, which was amazing since it takes around 14 months to grow. I now have clusters of bananas forming. I am not sure what type of banana plant I have, but it is certainly cold hardy. We had temperatures in the teens during the winter, with many frosts and several snows. All my plants originated from this type of banana plant, and I now have about 75, and they are multiplying. I am inserting an image. I think it may be a Musa Basjoo. Can anyone tell me by looking at my photos?
