I was told that these are Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas. I was given a 3ft tall pup two years ago and it pupped and pupped! I started a second mat with pups. When I started cutting pups out of the first mat, two of the stalks bloomed in September! The fruits are in the filling out stages.

One of them blew over from the Santa Ana winds, so I looked online and found a diagram showing how to make a support out of plumbing pipes and connectors. It works perfectly! I staked the one that had fallen over and it didn't break off when we hoisted it up~~yay!

We staked the other one just in case:) Please let me know if you think these are Blue Java, or, if not, what they might be. I haven't fed them other than some coffee grounds and mulching them with their own leaves. The two bunches that are ripening seem to be quite heavy with about 100 bananas on each.

The bananas are about 7 inches long and seem to filling out nicely. Any clue as to when they will be ripe? Should I cut them down to ripen after they fill out a bit more? I read somewhere that Blue Javas take a long time to ripen and that it's best to let the first hand ripen on the stalk. Please let me know what to do since I'm a newbie and this is the first time I have bananas that are fruiting. Thanks!!!!

p.s. This is one of the flowers that we decided to soak in salted water and then slice thin to add to a stir fry - it was delicious! Has anyone else here tried that?
