These are the real deal, not the "Ice Cream" being sold at some nurseries in Southern California. These photographs are from Quail Gardens in Encinitas, CA.

yeah i think ice cream/blue java is the most misrepresented variety in the hobby. i think about less than half of everyone who think they are growing java have the real deal.

Agreed. Wouldn't surprise me if it was even less than half. My guess is that the folks doing the TC got the wrong plant to TC and then all the nurseries propagate it without asking any questions about its ID.

Which also means the real ones are probably rare if you try to get one from a nursery. What are the 'true' characteristic differences? The real ice cream sure is a good looking banana.

The true blue java usually (not always) has fruit that are more blue than anything else you've seen, they are more angular in cross section than the rounder fruits of the "fake Ice Cream" being sold, and the hands of fruit are more widely spaced. I'm sure there are other different characteristics, too. I honestly don't know how the tastes compare, since I've never eaten a true Ice Cream / Blue Java fruit -- yet! Someday.

Anything different about the plant? Looks like no pink. Good pics!
