I think these are the aphids that spread BBTV (banana bunchy top virus) in the natural world. Even if I look constantly I almost never get a glimpse of the aphids, I think they usually hide. The only time I ever see them is when they move to the new leaves. This is on a fairly mature plant and generally too high to get a good look. (That is the only size of plant I've ever seen them on.) If I ever see them again I'll get a ladder out and get a better picture.



By the time the fruit is harvested the aphids are long gone.


UH (University of Hawaii) has some good web pages on BBTV. I think the modern way the virus is spread is by dirty tools - using the same machete going around between plants whacking leaves, etc. And the big leaps are by taking an infected keiki to an area that doesn't have BBTV.
