It is a cattleya species orchid. Most of what you see today are hybrids, but there are a few of the old species types around. A species type is what you would find in the middle of the jungle and saw one on a tree. This one's blooms are about 5 1/2 " wide.


Oh, yeah, species tend to be less popular since they generally bloom once a year.

Get a variety of species so that you have different blooming periods - that way you can have something in bloom all year. But you have to know your plants - different ones have different needs; you can't treat them all the same. It makes it a little more challenging.
