Banana Gallery - dwarf orinoco mother corm

as you can see this is dwarf orinoco corm with the spent/fruited p stem from 2009.. in winter 2008 i wrapped the p stem with insulation.. it survived snow untill spring but there was p stem rot.. i chopped it low and it later fruited.. i left the ground naked last year to see if it could survive without intervention. it has survived and seems to be mostly unaffected by the snow,and all the cold weather. glad it snowed so the test would be under similar conditions as before. i dug it up and examined it,and its rock solid..... its just resending some of last years pups,dont think any are new. . i will see how big they get this year or if i get a flower..time will tell.
if there is nothing at least we know it can take extended periods of cold weather and a little snow...

as you may notice in the pics the corm was moved further away from the fence(and the tree).. i opened up the growing area and removed about 25-30 feet of tree root to make room for more bananas. with all the new tree roots that had surfaced into the plot looking for water i dont know how it even fruited last year... especially with so many things that were working against it.

this is a pictorial documentation. i am not hyping this dwarf Orinoco up or competing with any legendary cultivars. i just found it interesting that under the conditions its been subjected to.. so far this plant and its pups doing well for me ..
