The only open spaces in forest of this type are found directly above the rivers. The Tigre in late May is relatively low; at the peak of the wet season, it rages through this bed at amazing speed, carrying giant boulders and often entire uprooted trees. All of the boulders you see in the riverbed here came from much further up the mountain. In the dry season, it's considered to be class III to class IV rapids, and in the wet season, class VI.
