I'm really not sure how this came to be in the primary forests at just 1,200 meters of elevation (perhaps a bird brought it). Bomarea are normally high cloud-forest plants (2,000 meters and up.) It's pretty, though. Bomarea, of which there are some 58 Ecuadorean species, are related to the more commonly seen florist's staple, Alstromeria.
