Shortest/Dwarfiest Banana to Flower?

Found my pink velvet (Musa velutina) to be in the process of flowering. The thing is, it is only a foot tall! From what I've gathered online these should grow to 4 to 7 ft tall (~1.5-2m).

Do you...

The Pink Velvet (Musa velutina) is somehow flowering. It's only about 1 ft tall. No shot it can support inflorescence right?

Re: First flower! Dwarf Orinoco

PR-Giants: Thanks for the clarification of terms. Yes, I meant to ask which cultivars are typically able to yield seed. This leads to another question: which cultivars are typically able to produce...

Re: Tissue cultures keep dying

I definitely understand the TC issue.

I've had 3 TCs for a couple of months now, and they're so finicky and growing barely faster than snails race.

It seems like we've passed the glory days of...

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

This method is much faster than tissue culture propagation but more importantly, even though it wasn't directly stated in the original post it should have been obvious to all that the goal was to...

I swear PR, every time you post it's a wealth of knowledge.

Thank you for explaining this technique for the newer generation of Banana growers.

I just look up your posts and I feel like Scrooge...

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

I think the question was asked as a teaching moment for the typical banana collectors that are visitors here. Most here do not want to deal with tissue culture as growing bananas is just a fun...

Re: Experimenting with creating filtered coarse sand for corms

Well you and I definitely have the fever bad. Over a year ago I drove (If my memory serves me) 300 miles round trip to buy Turface MVP that looks to be a similar size to PR-Giants medium although I...

Re: Experimenting with creating filtered coarse sand for corms

I would love to see pics of holes in sides of containers.

I just spent all day, 200 miles of driving to several gravel/sand/quarry places, big box stores, and nurseries. Didn't find a single source...

Re: First flower! Dwarf Orinoco

Would there be any potential in crossing an Orinoco and Velutina?

Also fantastic pictures!

Re: Variegated Dwarf

This subgroup is a good choice for most growers because it's very hardy and has decent cold tolerances.

I prefer the variegation of the non...

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

Anytime a member removes a pup from the plant they usually leave some of the pup's rhizome with the mother plant, so in a general sense this technique is very common.

Understanding the basics of...

Re: Experimenting with creating filtered coarse sand for corms

My drainage holes were a big part of the problem. I used a 1/4 drill bit, and drilled dozens of holes, but they were just too small, and with resting on the ground, clogged up. I was totally fooled...

Re: Experimenting with creating filtered coarse sand for corms

How much drainage did you have in those whiskey barrels? A lot of people (including myself in past years) drill 3 or 4 holes and consider that enough. Drainage holes are not only for drainage of...
