I used to pile mulch, then tie up fronds and wrap with burlap, then place a plastic trash bag with vent holes over it. Didn't do any of this last winter, and every Trachycarpus fortunei came through fine!
This one is in year 2.

Butia capitata, aka Pindo or Jelly Palm. I pot it up and bring it inside for the winter. I've lost 2 Butias trying to keep them outside.
