I have such a love for Heliconias! When I travelled to Oahu (all 5 or 6 times) I always visited the Pearlridge mall's farmer's market. Home growers were happy to cut flowers and provide huge flower boxes to bring back to SF. I brought home so many from each trip--including sexy pink, and others equally magnificent. I was charged as little as 25 cents per flower stalk! The lobster claw is my special favorite.

thanks! This plant is spectacular! Breath-taking, actually. It's a pipe dream of mine to have one just like this. Sigh.

Lovely plant! I peeked at the small plant on your front porch and see it has draping leaves as well. I may have found my first banana. Thanks!

Very graceful banana plant! Do the leaves normally drape rather than spread as with most bananas I've seen here? I notice it's pretty dim lighting, is that normal too for this plant? I'm hoping to get a plant that can be overwintered indoors if necessary. I like this one, particularly its graceful leaves.

Is Heliconia Caribea Lamarck x Heliconia Biahi (L.) L. cv Jacquinii
Habit Musoid
Heliconia rostrata is commonly known as False Bird of Paradise, Hanging Heliconia, or Lobster Claw. It is native to Northwestern South America, but it is commonly grown in tropical gardens throughout the World because of its exotic beauty.
The relatively inconspicuous flowers emerge from plump, red and yellow bracts and are pollinated by hummingbirds. Heliconia rostrata blooms in late spring and early summer, and its pendulous, waxy inflorescences can last for weeks on the plant. The plants grow to about 8 feet (2.4 m) tall and look quite similar to banana plants.
