Re: Are you Superstitious
That's me too. I'd rather go out in the yard & play baseball or something than to go to some dumb football game. Besides, all ya can do in an arena is just sit & watch. No Way!

Re: Are you Superstitious
I was also born on the 13th and if you ever notice there is never a 13th floor on most buildings.
Most sailors are known to be superstitious but I consider myself to not be even though I am ex navy. Although I would never change the name of a boat/ship. Uh ok so maybe I am superstitious............... |

Re: Are you Superstitious
Jeeps! Forgot about that. The old mariners practically wrote the book on superstitions! That'd be worth a thread in itself. Hadn't heard the one about not changing a vessel's name, though.

The old mariners had many stories to tell when they returned to port. Some were even true. But every story was interesting to listen to, as told by the Conveyor of such adventures. I just noticed sbl's remark about the old country folk of the south. It's soooooooo true. Thanks sbl. Thanks for your responses everybody. Have a better day than yesterday.

Re: Are you Superstitious
Actually I am a Virgo- circa 1970 (wow, I sound vintage).
Here's a bit about renaming boats- a bit too deep for me. No pun intended. Superstitions - Renaming A Boat or a House / GlobalPsychics.com Quote:
Well maybe I shouldn't ignore the obvious. All the facts point to me being just a tab superstitious (I couldn't find a banana smiley in a boat) |

Re: Are you Superstitious
I'm with the theater, and I have most of their superstitions (ground into me since I was a wee bairn, actually.) Hence:
I won't ever whistle in a theater I get uneasy if three rehearsals go by without a falling sandbag I refuse to say the name of That Scottish Play (although if I have a son, I will give him the name as it is my right) I refuse to wear white on opening nights (which generally means I dress a la page) I also have all of my Scottish Granny's planting superstitions, which I try to follow because I swear my plants fail if I don't. |

Re: Are you Superstitious
Wow! Didnt know there were theatrical superstitions too! Guess superstitions are just everywhere . Even Welsh miners had a superstition that carried over into America. Tommyknockers. Prior to a cave-in, the timbers produced a knocking sound. There were those who believed it was caused by elf-like creatures attacking the miners. Others (especially the Welsh) believed it was the ghost of an old miner trying to alert the other miners to impending disaster. In America, Welsh miners would refuse to go to work in new mines until they were certain the Tommyknockers had already arrived to watch over them. In fact, there was an American mining company that actually gave into their superstitious demands.
Great stuff for Halloween but I dont think I could ever be superstitious about all that junk (knock on wood) . Anyway, back to looking for my rabbit's foot.... Gotta be here somewhere ! |

Re: Are you Superstitious
Some physicists worry that if they were a photon "walking" along a ruler, they might trip and fall into a 9-dimensional hole.

That's a real Scary though, Richard! Although, I've played some video-games where ya had to walk along a super narrow tightrope. What happened when ya fell could easily rank with, or even surpass, those 9 dimensions!! If there are any more physicists type superstitions, dont be shy !! Re: Are you Superstitious
Actually, Eric, the theatre shares a bunch of superstitions with sailors - largely because it was tarheels who originally designed and manned the fly galleries and other rigging of theatres. Hence, since aboard a tall ship one uses whistles to signal rigging movements, one does not whistle in a theatre because it (used to) cause scenery to fall on you from above when the rigger recognized the signal to drop sail and applied it to the fly ropes.
Equally, once a stage is named that name is traditionally never changed - same as mariners and ships. The building can be renamed, but the stage within it keeps its original moniker. Hence, I work here in the Teatro Bolívar, which has been called many things, but the stage inside has always been known as Libertad. |

Re: Are you Superstitious
Thanx Beth! Sounds like a missing link to me! I know that the Tommyknocker thing made it from Wales to the Americas, and finally to Steven King !! And it must've gotten here by boats, too!
Btw, BUMP !! |
