When you stare at one particular banana (dwarf Brazilian ) and try to inspect it at least 8 times a day for any signs of emerging flag leaf that never comes.
And still hoping endlessly.
Yes, I am sick.

If they start using the term "water rationing" where you live. And you decide the banana plants need the water more than you do. (Showering is so over-rated...)
And... if you spend most of your time with your banana plants, they can handle an unwashed caregiver anyway.

You know you're a banana fiend when....

....there are three hands of three different distinct types of nanner on your counter, and you look at them and think "hey, it's time to buy bananas, I'm almost out!"

ba-NA-no, actually, and this only refers to the tree. ba-NA-na is the sweet fruit, and PLA-ta-no is the plantain or cooking banana.

And if you go back up to last page, there are a host of other names as well. You might be a banana fiend if you know them all.

Mskitty: Oh so that's easy to remember. It is so close to English just changed A to O and there you have it.
So when you want to buy a banana in the store in Tiijuana, what do you say?

you could say( and if i get this wrong someone please correct me, my spanish is not what it shoud be, you would think with 2 semesters and an "a" and "b" in the class i could speak better spanish...) cuanto es el banano?(how much is the banana plant) and if you want to buy banana fruit you could say: cuantas es las bananas? there are accents over a few letters but i dont have my keyboard set up for it. ( im getting the rosettastone for my spanish, i might actually learn something usefull)

Those are both correct; because of Latin inverted sentence structure you can also say:

To buy a plant - <> (or in South America, <>) This only applies if the pups are in containers for sale. To attempt to purchase a pup from a farmer, the best thing to ask is <> (will you give me a baby banana from this tree? For how much>)
To buy a hand - <>

thanks lorax....i was worried it was wrong. my teacher wasnt too interested in teaching us what we needed to know. she was more interested in dancing with the stars and the history( which is important when your learning about a culture) but we need to learn things for instance: if we go to a spanish speaking country how to ask for directions, understand the directions they are trying to give: wonder what the 2 guys in the bar are talking about when they keep looking at you: understand if someone is trying to get more money for that shrivled up nana tree then its worth...you know that kind of thing. lol. . apparently that wasnt important to my instructor.

I learned by immersion, aka necessity. When I came to Ecuador about a year and a half ago, all I knew for sure how to say was "Por favor" "Gracias" "Mango" (and a few other fruits with Spanish names, like Papaya and Banana) and "Permisio de fumar?" Colombian airport security sure was a hoot that first time, let me tell you!

After about a year of contiguous habitation in the country, I'm fluent. It was by necessity, because one can only pull out one's phrasebook so often.

Yeah, but who can afford them? I had a Berlitz pocket phrasebook for Mexico from 1972. The Colombian army though I was really cute.
