Wildlife
Near as I can tell, this visitor I posted about the other day was a Peregrine Falcon.

Re: Wildlife
I went out this morning and spotted these two large red-tailed hawks sitting in a pine tree across the street.

Re: Wildlife
Such pretty birds they are! But, having lost chickens to them, I'm not a fan. (It's not like there weren't pesky rabbits and squirrels to dine on that I've been told taste just like chicken!)
And then there are raccoons that I doubt taste like chickens though they sure love to kill them. They only take a little taste. Wasteful animals they are. So I'm visiting 150 miles south of where I live. Friday the neighbor across the street came over to report a raccoon acting very odd under a tree in his back yard; it was lethargic so probably not rabid but not healthy. My friend and I told him to call animal control. Apparently he did but, when they didn't call back or show up, he went out with his wife leaving a babysitter in charge. Fortunately I'd asked to see the creature and could walk the officer who eventually showed up where to find the body without expecting the babysitter to get involved. (How much extra would that charge be? ) He looped it up and concurred that it was already not long for this world. Silly tale, I know. But I was glad to see it gone. One less chicken killer, sweet corn taster and trash can disruptor in the gene pool. I have yet to see one wash their food...

Re: Wildlife
I like the raccoons in my neighborhood and other places I've lived in southern California. They feed primarily on grubs (insect larvae) in the ground and don't bother my fruits or vegetables. I'm happy to have them as visitors.
The local hawks have learned that the chicken pen and coup a few houses away is an impenetrable fortress. Instead, they concentrate on keeping the vole, gopher, rabbit, snake, and chihuahua population under control.

Re: Wildlife
I knew west coasters are infinitely more relaxed than east coasters but had no idea even the wildlife was more laid back. Cool.
BTW, the only chicken I lost to a hawk was the one that wandered into the uncovered run. However, a mink, 2 coons and a skunk penetrated the barn; they were dispatched. (I would not have been so angry if they hadn't insisted on killing 2 to 4 instead of dining on 1.)

Eastern box turtle.
This pic is over a year old......I just saw him today in the woods under some brush......wow. Note his notched shell behind his head, thats his signature. Last edited by cincinnana : 05-14-2014 at 05:59 AM. |

Re: Wildlife
This was taken last spring on my Mother's property....she lives in the interior of the province about 45 minutes from the nearest town and has all kinds of wildlife: from deer, elk and moose to bears (black and grizzly), wolves and wild cats (cougar and lynx) so a morning stroll can be VERY interesting.

Re: Wildlife
A feral turkey eating all the sweet sugary buds off my Clematis.
I love when the turkeys infest my yard each year..raising young. They are here for a few weeks (after they eat all my plants and bugs and then move on). Truly.... these guys at night nest on my home and in the trees.... They will even follow you around the yard looking for handouts. . |
