Re: Who's growing caterpillars ?
You probably mean who is intentionally growing caterpillars? I hope to grow Catawba (Catalpa) worms for use as fish bait. Does that count?

Re: Who's growing caterpillars ?
One almost got my baby SDC but I cought him in the act. I included him in my first new member introduction post on this site.
That was the only honour he had before he was cast off my plant. Last edited by Pallen : 05-19-2014 at 08:24 PM. Reason: Added picture |

I don't grow them, they just appear on my Persian lime and Grapefruit.

I've got 3 on my desert rose plants. Long fat green (non-fuzzy) buggars with fake eye-spots.

Re: Who's growing caterpillars ?
Tobacco hornworms are a HUGE problem (no pun intended) here for tomatoes, if one is growing organically. Since mine are on a trellis this year, I'm going to try draping with bird netting to keep the hawk moths from being able to land. I have an amazing UV flashlight though, if they do emerge. Those suckers glow green.
Ever notice how in nature, a lot of things to stay away from or otherwise identify, glow under UV light? Scorpions, porcupine quills, rattlesnake tails etc.? Many animals see UV light, and these things glow as both a danger sign and a potential food source.

Re: Who's growing caterpillars ?
For me ...awareness and selective control is key.
I am a pollinator advocate. Some caterpillars you just have to let them run their course on your plants. However if you plant host plants the caterpillers will gravitate towards them and hopefully leave your best plants alone. Free to join. .http://cincinnatizoo.org/horticultur...r-pollinators/ |

She's in chains, LOL.
If any of you remember a guest VJ on MTV named China Kantner, that was Grace and Paul's daughter.

Re: Who's growing caterpillars ?
Okay, while digging spuds yesterday, I came a cross a giant green cater-grub about 10" below the surface. It was 3-3.5" long, as big around as my thumb, and curled. I came in to get my camera and when I got back outside, I couldn't find it. Any idea what it could have been? I'm thinking some kind of giant beetle larva, but it doesn't match the rhinoceros beetle; they're all whitish. This was the color of a hornworm; maybe a tad darker. and no legs.

Re: Who's growing caterpillars ?
Figured out what was eating my Desert Rose leaves - Oleander Hawkmoth. Green version of a hawk-moth. These guys don't even make cocoons; they just lay on the dirt until they emerge. They were brought here to eat invasive oleander plants, but if they can't find any nearby, Desert Rose leaves are also in their diet.
