Yeah I remember...
Rabies is a serious 100% fatal but avoidable disease.
There is a vaccine you can and must give your Cat, dog or ferret.
As well as a post bite series to prevent the onset in humans. There is no post bite exposure series for animals! There is no blood test to check to see if your animal has contracted the disease.
There is observation or death and testing. There is a six month strict quarantine if your pet has lapsed on its shots! You cannot touch your pet.
A 45 day "observation" if you have a current vaccination.
Get your pets vaccinated and keep up with it! You can walk in to the Vets and demand just the rabies vaccination. The Health Department will not recognize if YOU gave your dog, cat or ferret the vaccine...it must be given by a Veterinarian with a tag/certificate.
In Georgia the major rabies carriers are:
#1 Bats - do NOT handle them unless you have had the rabies series and have checked your titer levels.
Raccoon
Fox
Bob Cats
Skunks
Coyotes
otter
Cats - they play with bats, but they will not usually not survive an attack from a larger rabid animal. Get your indoor cats vaccinated too, bats can get into your house.
Dogs
Equine - a donkey contracted rabies and bit the owner
hoof stock like goats, pigs and cattle

Sorry... this tragedy is preventable

Okay sorry... hijacking this thread as a public service announcement.

A family has just lost their outdoor cat to a rabid raccoon.
People - get your cats and dogs vaccinated against rabies and keep your cats indoors!
The cat is not currently vaccinated against rabies,tangled with the raccoon, and lived only to be quarantined until the test results came back.
Well the raccoon tested positive for rabies, just got the results.
The owner's do not want to force a six month strict confinement on the cat.

The saddest part again: This was a totally senseless and completely avoidable loss of a beloved family pet...
