What Are You Listening To?

I thought it might be interesting to see what type of music members like, and how it changes day-to-day. I love music; am a musician and play the trombone. My likes are very eclectic....Classical, jazz, classic rock, some country music (but not much), no rap or hip hop (I've tried but just can't get into it, but then again I'm an old codger of 61), love boogie woogie, blues, celtic, klezmer, classical guitar, folk, swing and southern rock. Right now I'm listening to a wonderful recording of Brahms' Sonatas for Cello and Piano, with Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax. Sublime!

Re: What Are You Listening To?

Currently, I'm listening to Supertramp - Crime of the Century (Dreamer), and as I write that has changed to Kenny Rogers - The Gambler. I've got my 5,000 song library on shuffle, so just about anything could be next.

I listen to just about everything except death metal. Country music in small doses, and swing-jazz but not acid jazz. I have a special place in my heart for ska and dub reggae, I love jump-blues, "world" music especially African and Middle-Eastern rhythms. However, if I had to take a single record with me to a desert island, it would be Mozart's Requiem.

I play the banjo, charango, flute, trombone, and piano, and I sing contralto.

Re: What Are You Listening To?

Another slide jockey! My piano skills are so minuscule I wouldn't mention them. I used to also play the accordion and the baritone bugle. (My son plays alto, tenor and bari sax.)This is fascinating! I'm impressed. Dreamer is a good cut. I also would have Requiem, and would add Sonny Rollins' Saxophone Colossus and The Blues Brothers, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue!

Edit- How could I forget to bring Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool?

I love those 50s, 60s, and early 70s records. I have all of Elvis' original albums, all of Joni James' original albums and CDs. Also have over 10,000 song collection on karaoke (you'd never guess I'm Filipino, huh?) in various formats. Last time I was in Vegas, my wife and I happened to be in the lounge at the Boulder Station and they were celebrating Elvis' 30 year anniversary that evening. I sang "Can't help Falling in Love" and got a standing ovation from the patrons in the lounge, and warm handshakes from the people who were in the aisles. And I was just wearing slippers because we were staying at that hotel.

i played piano for 9 years....then had curpral tunnel surgery...in what used to take me 9.7 seconds to run up 88 keys now takes me almost 8 minutes...so the dexterity sucks! now i play the radio and the cd player and do it pretty well.. hahaha. i like 80's big hair bands, what they called "mod" mucis in the 80's.....duran duran, omd, and yes culture club, hahahah. stephen wolfe, skynnard etc.. i still like my ratt, motleycrue, winger,warrent,etc....but my favorite, all time favorite is to hear my 11 month old grandson bang on the 1898 behr bros piano i have sitting in my living room.( beethovens, motzart, bach and the rest are good too).

Re: What Are You Listening To?

I played guitar in bands for almost 20 years and then took up classical violin for 10. My wife makes fun of me because after work I'll go put on cd's and have a cocktail and the selection will go from Jimi Hendrix to the Monkees to the Stones to Itzahk Perlman playing Paganini to Steppenwolf and back to Bach. Then maybe some Blues......Pretty much everything but Rap and disco.

Howard you like klezmer aye? I'm not Jewish but used to go see the klezmatics a lot . They are from NYC and used to play around here. Great violinist in that group.

Sam, Culture club and Winger?........ugh

Chong, what's with you Filipinos that most of y'all can sing so well? Food, water, air you breathe? When I was in Cebu many years ago, I figure 9/10 can really sing. Normal church service is like a big concert. I was so impressed.

F&$% yeah! I thought I was the only EDM lover on here. I'm currently working my way through an 8.5 hour live set by Armin van Buuren (progressive trance). I listen to mostly EDM (electronic dance music....'techno' if you will) and hard rock, but also some reggae. My favorite genres of EDM in order are: trance/progressive trance/epic trance, happy hardcore, drum & bass, electro, house, psy-trance and breaks. I really love it all, though...except maybe speedcore.

just j, if you're looking for good EDM music for free download, or anything else associated with that sort of scene, check out Online EDM Community - GenXGlow.com. I'm a moderator on there....it's an AMAZING site. If you get on there, be sure to give me a shout...LilRaverBoi (you'll find me on there, trust me, I'm ubiquitous!).

Oh, and PS...you get 40 points in my book for your response! LOL

Re: What Are You Listening To?

Its classic rock, blues and classical for me. Music I've bought is mostly blues. Damn Right I've got the Blues by Buddy Guy was probably the last CD I bought. Have a lot of Muddy Waters.

I played the trap set in a small rock band growing up. Played a little in a country band. I played the banjo but haven't picked one up in a long while. I get the telecaster (black and gold) out every once in a while pumping thru my 1953 les paul jr.'s three tubes (actually the signal only goes thru two). Rock on!

I'm all over the musical map. Just about anything get played in this house!

Brian, I'm 45 and even I like EDM and used to participate heavily in the Underground scene before it became known as the "Rave scene" We actually had our parties/clubs in vacant warehouses with stolen electricity from neighboring buildings! This was back in the late 80's into the early 90's. It was a lot of fun, no rules or dress codes, just cool people having fun until the police or fire dept showed up. Got to see most of the big DJs from the day spin. This was before lasers and light shows, but fire breathers/jugglers were not unusual! The clubs were also very hard to find. First you had to be on a mailing list to get the instructions, then go from on spot to another getting new instructions until you finally found the party. This was also before the gangs got involved. Good times!

I'm more into Glitch these days, especially from the likes of eDIT and the Glitch Mob.

At the moment I'm really into Emily Wells. Don't quite know how to explain her stuff but it's really fun to see her in a small 50-100 person club while chillin with some cocktails!

Here is a clip from the Emily Wells Trio Symphony shot at Hotel Cafe which is where we like to see her perform.

60's, 70's and 80's but would lean more towards Clapton, Santana and the Stones than Beach Boy type music. Old Country and some new. Classical, new age, southern rock, country/rock blues, folk music, hymns and .........the rain! Glad you mentioned that Taylor! Love nature sounds, especially running water.

Oh yeah....I know all about underground parties. I've been to more than a few warehouse parties and parties where you have to call the 'info line' the day of the party to get directions. And yeah, I spin fire poi, glowsticks, ropedart, flags, contact juggle, devilsticks and staff (yeah, I'm a regular circus freak...LOL). I also do laser lighting for parties under my small business, Optical TrancenDANCE. CA scene is pretty shady from all the things I've heard...lots of massives (10k+ people...not necessarily a bad thing, just not my style) and lots of drugs/gangs/violence/drama/BS. I'm originally from Iowa and our scene is pretty pure and kickin' (believe it or not).

Glad to hear there are other EDM-lovers on this site!

Gee, Duane Eddy . . . . I was a radio DJ in the summers of 62 and 63 in Manila, and my opening and closing theme song was, "Rebel Rouser" by Duane Eddy! I needed to be different, and I chose Duane Eddy's music over The Ventures, who were a lot more popular there then.

So, have you found a CD with "Songs of Our Heritage" since then?

Wow (not in a good way)! On Amazon.com they have some stuff but mostly discontinued. On Amazon.co.uk they also have some, but the boxed set is UK£516 - US$1000 - sorry but that is too pricey and besides it is not "Songs of our Heritage", which I might not rate after all this time! Why spoil a fantasy with a dose of reality!!

I suppose I should mention that I also have a thang for music where I can't understand a word of what is being sung. I'm madly in love with an album from a Norse prog rock band that took the old Norse sagas and put them to music. The band's called YM:Stammen, the album "Guden i Steinen"

If you're looking for just the album "Songs of Our Heritage", there was a re-issue on CD format in 2003, I believe. Here are some sources that are not so expensive as what you found:
Amazon.com: Used and New: Songs of Our Heritage

Amazon.com: Songs of Our Heritage: Duane Eddy: Music

Duane Eddy - Songs of Our Heritage in Music: '60s at JR.com

Sweet! Music-one of my other great loves! For me, I've always been a rock fan. I was born in the early 70's and my parents were always playing music around the house or in the car. I love almost all of what is considered "Classic" rock-Zeppelin, Aerosmith, KISS, The Doors, ZZ Top etc. I'm also a huge 80's rock fan-Motley Crue, Ratt, etc, love bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensryche, Metallica, Megadeth, Disturbed, Shindedown, Nickleback, etc. Then again, I also like some country, blues, and some Christian music. But I'll always be a headbanger at heart. Rock on!

Re: What Are You Listening To?

Music is an emotion to me.....different verses for different times. 90% of the time I have some form of metal banging through my head, usually in the mornings I have Dagoba (French Industrial / Metalcore) or In Flames (Melodic death / Progressive Metalcore) blasting out my ears on my ride to work. Throughout the day I like being inspired by a more progressive approach such as Dream Theater (Prog Rock) or Soilwork (Prog Death / Melodic Death). By the end of the day into the afternoon I enjoy having "pretty" sounds all around me consisting of Kittie (Hardcore), Lacuna Coil (Goth), Within Temptation (goth), and Arch Enemy (straight deth, yo!), etc. After I put my kids to bed and kick on the XboX 360, I turn into a glowstick flinging, liquid-poppin, party light turnin-onin Hard House, Trip-Hop, Eclectic Trance, and Hard Garage FREAK!! My friend (DJ Darius) got me into the trip-hop and Garage stuff when he came home from Michigan and threw me about 5 of his CD's and told me to melt my brain with them.....lol. And there are some days I turn to Rap (even the strong have a meltdown every now and again) and Horrorcore rap. Horrorcore , i.e., Ill Bill, Brotha Lynch Hung, old Mister Doctor, SicX, Baby Regg.

BTW, to me country music doesn't exist.........what people call country nowadays, I call Pop. If you are talking Hank Williams Sr., Conway Twitty or anything that involves a guy losing his wife to his horse and taking his pickup with his dog tied in the bed of said truck and his mobile home rolling down a hill all in one song verse. For the simple fact that I cant stand pop or country for any length of time. The only radio stations I listen to are classic rock and modern rock, and even those I have to turn off after so long.

Shaggy

There is nothing that frustrates me more than the stations here in the Twin Cities( and maybe lots of cities) they play all or nothing, all country, all rap, all classical, all pop etc. This station plays a huge variety of artists, Frand Sinatra, Andre Bocelli, Josh Groban, Kenny Rogers, Beach Boys, etc., they keep my day going here at work, I pull them up on the computer and I am a happy camper. :woohoonaner:

Boy Cheryl... we were definitely from the same era. I couldn't agree more with your list but the Stones late 60's early 70's are always number one for me. Most shocking is that you were a New York Dolls fan. I met them all and got to know a few of them reasonably well after they broke up in to the David Johansen group, Heartbreakers etc. back in the early 80's since they were around here all the time and we had mutual aquaintances .....used to be in the city on a regular basis back then...............
Now.......ho hum sub urban middle aged gardener :ha:
