It's all relative. My daughters say I'm plant crazed like the author of "The $64 Tomato". But then I'm peanuts compared to my friend Suzy who has over 2,000 varieties, who in turn is peanuts to our colleague in Bonsall who has over 10,000 species and cultivars of a very broad spectrum of plants: all edible, and all in 6-inch or larger containers with some in the ground.

On the flip side, I met a guy yesterday who has 1 large greenhouse measuring 200 feet (61 meters) wide by 2,000 feet (610 meters) long which fills up most of a 10-acre parcel. The walls are about 10 feet (3 m) high all around with a few doors, and the ceiling is about 20 feet (6 m) high in the center. He only has 4 species of plants and only about 5 cultivars of each -- all Bromeliad relatives. BUT, there are just over 1,000,000 plants in there. About 2,000 of them are "mother" plants that generate the stock. My understanding is that it takes about 4 months from the time slips (pups) are generated from the mother plants to the time they are mature in size and color to sell and ship. Just down the road a bit from him is a major nursery covering 1200 acres and they have at least 100 of such greenhouses generating all kinds of annuals and perennials.

So yeah, I'm tiny by comparison. :D

Re: What plants are you growing??

Yep, I agree with Richard its all relative. I think it all boils down to what you really enjoy. I have been collecting plants for a very long time. I am the kind of idiot who must have anything rare or variegated and who always end up broke from this bad obsession!
Now I have stopped counting the number or varieties/species I have. I just make sure they are in very good condition and growing. I do not propagate my plants on purpose as I do not sell them(I need all the space I can get!). My house is small, so I keep only the ones which need extra care here. The rest are in my 3 acre nursery.
I don't consider myself 'big' or 'tiny' in plants but 'happy'!:ha:

Re: What plants are you growing??

I love your outlook, thanks.
I can't imagine a 10 acre greenhouse! Hmmm, what would that cost around here to heat in winter? YIKES
Temps just dipped in low teens tonight with more snow on the way. I'm sicky poo w/ a flu bug arrrgh. My plants will keep me going though.

Re: What plants are you growing??

Ah..Patty, regarding happiness through plants, I forgot to add this in...

You see, when I see a particular plant I like, it makes me happy, especially when it is in bloom. Then, I have to wait for its next bloom to be happy again, rite..? Now what I did was I bought many of the same plant so I can be many more times happy especially when they bloom at different times!
I have been asked why do I have like 2,000 of the same plant? Well it makes me 2,000 times happy that's why!

In the past I was totally nuts about the Slipper Orchid, Paphipedilum and I had a collection of more than 12,000 plants of most of its species(I don't like the hybrids). Sounds illogical? Who cares when I can be 12,000 times happy!
Cheers!:ha::ha::ha::ha::ha:

Re: What plants are you growing??

that is where i am moving when i am a legal age i am most likely moving near either Naples or fort lauderdale Florida. It is nice and warm there, I will have to get use to the hurricanes. Oh well zone 9b or even 10a is so much better then zone 5b,where i am now...:woohoonaner:

JCDerrick 12-05-2008 12:51 PM

Re: What plants are you growing??

Yeah the Hurricanes are the only thing that make me nervous about Florida. Though honestly, where I live now is vulnerable too. Hugo made a mess here in the late 80's and it's bound to happen again sometime.

kaczercat 12-05-2008 12:57 PM

Re: What plants are you growing??

wow, that does suck.

Patty in Wisc 12-05-2008 04:22 PM

Re: What plants are you growing??

No hurricanes here - just tornados which can do as much damage.
That's a nice assortment you have too John!
I added over 10 forgotten things on my list LOL.

JCDerrick 12-05-2008 04:47 PM

Re: What plants are you growing??

I think if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the Hurricane (except right at the eye wall). Unfortunately we get our fair share of tornadic activity here too; and I could never live in the mid-west; I'd have stress. Some braves souls live in Oklahoma.

kaczercat 12-05-2008 05:11 PM

Re: What plants are you growing??

Speaking on tornadoes, When i was seeing my family in Muncie Indina there was a family who was staying at the same hotel ,holiday inn 3 floors. The lady who worked there told me they lived in Oklahoma and a tornado hit there house destroying everything in their area they let them stay there till they got their house rebuilt. Such nice people.---But i don't remember why they had to go so far up north.
