There is a pair of birds that watches me quite closely when I work in the garden. Sometimes I have to watch were I put my feet because when I use a rake or a hoe they are often between my feet looking for critters to snack on. I've even see the female (pictured here) eat a centipede!
When in a good mood, the male has quite a complex song. Otherwise, they both just use a clicking-like sound. They never seem afraid. Female White-rumped Shama. |

Kinda like having a mini-dinosaur. I read somewhere that the males are the ones with the horns (horny little guy?).

I know katydids are a pest species, but I have an affection for them since I kept them as pets when I was a little kid. I watched this one grow up through her nymph stages into an adult over the summer last year. Really fascinating! I had plenty of plants around, so she never really damaged any one plant. Here she is on my favorite rose, Oranges n Lemons.

Mystery solved - it is a Chinese Yellow Swallowtail caterpillar. Smaller ones look like bird crap, larger form looks like snake head, and the chrysalis (which I'm trying to find) starts green, slowly turns dusty brown from which emerges a black and white swallowtail. I didn't see yellow in the photos so I down't know why the name has yellow in it.

I actually saw some feral parrots when I was in Pasadena today. Four of them in a tree, eating some berries. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good picture, it was too cloudy outside.
