Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Here is a pic some might find interesting....
.This is called a weir....It is a choke point placed in a stream to control, propagate and monitor Lamprey/Salmon/Trout populations in Michigan streams, my other playground and home. I have NEVER NEVER NEVER seen larger Salmon/Trout in the smallest of puddles of water just downstream from this photo. The water is absolutely crystal clear and flows at at rate of 2-7 mph down stream to Lake Michigan. This an absolute nature buzzz. The air temp is about 60- 70 and the water temp similiar .....sooo it feels very warm. Platte River Benzie County MI. The explanation of how it is done. The rearing tanks for Coho salmon which are released to this stream. . Last edited by cincinnana : 08-03-2014 at 07:41 AM. |

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Same thing on lake Okeechobee. Great bass fishing but limit consumption to one fish every 3 years. As the pollutants increase the time between intake is increased. yum yum

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Foote dam tailwater....Au Sable River Oscoda, Michigan
This is where I started my snorkeling journey. My wife wants no part of this even after I assured her it was perfectly safe and I had done this before.....she dropped me off and proceeded to a park downstream to wait for me. Fish stacked up in a quit riffle in photo below. Mix of smallmouth bass and a very few trout which embed themselves in the rocks...lots of crayfish and aquatic nymphs. Very large sucker fish on the bottom of the river which would not budge when harassed. Massive bass in the brush and timber. . Hittin the riffles later after I snorkeled/free floated a few miles of the river the day before to Lake Huron....and NO sharks.....I was always looking over my shoulder though. Average river current speed 1-8 mph my guess and of course it kicked my butt. Depth of the water 10 feet to the right of me in the photo is about 6 -10+- and fast cold clear water. Water depth very deceiving. However the whole experiance was very safe . . Another dam, another day of the same thing; however there were a lot more walleye and hand size bluegill. Water depth 2-12 ft with current speed at 1-4 mph my guess. Worms and poppers were used in this river. Last edited by cincinnana : 08-09-2014 at 09:50 PM. |

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
I just went pier fishing in Daytona Beach, FLorida. It was about a two hour drive, but the pier has a restaurant too, and with the menu and the fishing, I figured it was worth the drive.
I ended up with 4 fish I had to throw back, 3 angelfish and 1 mangrove snapper, but the day was one awesome time. I saw manatees, dolphins, a barracuda, a bonnethead shark, a sea turtle and lots of annoying grackle birds. Apparently the middle of next month, the fish start really hitting there, so I'll go back. |

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Last weekend I hit the Skyway Pier in St Petersburg/Tampa. There were the expected dolphins all over. Still didn't catch much in the way of fish, although I got a lot of small grunts and a jack.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Not yet, I had to drive to Tampa(that ended up in St Pete), so I made a fishing trip out of it. I'm hoping that next weekend or the one after I'll go back down to Daytona pier.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
I will keep it in mind for sure. I'm always looking for places to fish without a boat.
