Abnshrek...if it's any consolence to you those Saba are very cold hardy and probably on par with Orinoco. We will get it tonight but not quite as bad (I pray) as you. I am griting my teeth with the "Bambusa Hirose" which is borderline for our growing zone but looks good so far. Got my woodstove running on all cylinders.

All my apps and weather people keep saying it will get to 40F tonight but other people are talking about how they're prepping for the freeze and frosts, so I'm keeping an eye on all of it.

I went south 150 miles for Christmas--didn't plan to spend 7 nights but did. My tomatoes and other plants including basil got a lot bigger while I was gone; they didn't get frosted. I arrived in Jacksonville by chance but I'm beginning to think it's a pretty neat place to garden. Now I need to find 2 acres to prove I'm right.

Look in SW Ranches and you will be set. Southwest Ranches is located on the eastern edge of the Florida Everglades, 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale. You can have all the mango trees you can plant. And tangelos, avocados, lychees, loquats, bananas, persimmons, etc.

And Ft Lauderdale, West Palm and Miami will be your playground.

I brought a queen palm and loquat baby amongst other things back from my travels; they grow here

So moving there means I can have more types of plants than here? (Here I have perhaps enough chill hours for gooseberries, currants and rhubarb plus GS apples.) And sell fruit to those who don't see how to use their backyard? Fine.I'm open to a somewhere different...need to tidy up my bikini bottom I suspect but I can.

Well I thought the 24F we're going to have tonight was bad, but its not compared to the 20F (in N. La.) & the 17F (in S. Ark) that's predicted for Monday.. I think Jack Frost vowed to work harder for his New Year's Resolution.. :^)

Good luck Michael, those are some chilly temps. We're going to 33 tonight and 28 Monday night which will definitely be the coldest night of the winter so far. Guess I'm going to break out those heating cables for the Ae Ae.

My reports say 33f tonight, so everyone is wrapped up but most of my covers are at least damp from all the rain. Hopefully everyone will be okay!

My forecast is 36 but windchills of 25 for a few hours in the morning. (5 total cold but 2 or 3 are after sunrise--this Yankee gardener has seen much worse and not lost plants.) Winds from the NNW then switching to N; the banana's top will not be happy but she's inside a fence with southern exposure she's on her own. (My last tarping attempt was worthless.)

My veggie "bucket" garden has been ganged up and tarped; it's more in the line of fire for the wind. If I lose the DC, so be it. I don't think I will but have accepted that possibility; the plants in pots under her canopy are very small and only cold winds not a freeze are predicted. I'm pretty sure the 5 pups in ground will survive. I did leave a potted basil out in the open to see what happens. It hasn't thrived so if it's toast I'll live with it. And learn...

30 tonight in Biloxi and 32 tomorrow nite - Monday forecast is 24 and 28 Tues -
Musas are wrapped but I expect to lose some nanas this winter. Looks like it will be a good start on thinning the orinoco mat .
good for the fruit trees - not so much for the nanas
good luck y'all.

In Pace, FL the forecast is 28F, but more likely it will reach 27 to maybe 26F by 6AM. I live in a low spot that is a bit colder than at the top of the ridges. For next Monday night the forecast is 24 that is a hard freeze up our way. I will have to protect my citrus for that. About 5 hrs below 26 F is supposed to damage young Satsuma trees.

Edit for update: This morning at 6:30 AM was slightly above the 28F mark in the outdoor thermometer.

It was 31 at sunrise this morning. The real damage is going to occur on Monday night when NWS is predicting a low of 22. I've occasionally seen these temps before living all my life along the Gulf Coast but it has been years. I'll have a lot of wrapping of plants to do Sunday.

Odd - looks like East of me (Foley, AL, Pensacola, FL) will be a few degrees colder than Biloxi next week.

It's predicted to be in the TEENS here on monday AND tuesday night. I fully expect to lose a lot of plants. I'll be carrying everything mobile(potted) into the house tomorrow, and covering everything that I can. Abagnale has his xmas lights AND a cover, and I might be able to put another set of xmas lights on one other banana. Maybe.

At least my Gros Michal's will be inside. But all the Puerto Rican bananas, Dwarf reds, Grand nains, Double mahoi... all those are in the ground. Tempted to dig them up!

Would that even be a viable idea? If I dug up the plants, and brought them inside for a couple days then put them back into the ground? Or just cover and hope?

I feel your pain. It will be in the single digits here in North Carolina. I guess I picked the wrong time to try over-wintering banana plants in ground for the first time. Oh well, they're on there own because I am not digging anything up.
