About 500 miles by roads, less if you go across the Gulf.

Here is another picture from our region, be it a bad one, 30 miles offshore, in 100 feet of water the oil has not reached us yet.

Okay, JD wanted some pics from the midwest, so I'll happily take him up on that. I'd just like to share some pictures of my home....Iowa!

Most people think Iowa is just a boring state with a lot of corn....well, that's partially true. We do have a lot of corn LOL. But it's not boring there. It's laid back compared to a lot of places and is mostly made up of rural small towns. The people are genuine and kind and the scenery is beautiful. Here are some pics of my home state:

Here's a park near my hometown:

Here's my hometown, Mount Vernon, Iowa. Like most small towns in Iowa, the downtown areas are full of small privately-owned shops and historic buildings with unique facades with a lot of character not found in most modern buildings.

And yes, we have a lot of corn. We actually grow 7% of the WORLD's corn each year. And we are one of the leading states in soy bean production as well.

Here's our capital building in Des Moines. The dome is gold plated with real gold. It's very thin, don't worry...we don't waste all our money on the dome's gold LOL. We do put a lot into agriculture and education has always been of great importance in my state.

Here's another pic of Des Moines:

Here are some soybean pics:

And by now, you probably think it's a pretty boring agricultural state....but it's not boring. The midwest has some of the most extreme weather. We have floods, droughts, straight-line winds, golf ball-sized hail, blizzards, thunderstorms, heat lightning, fog, freezing fog, freezing rain, ice storms, sleet, tornadoes, wave clouds, hot humid summers, subzero winters, etc etc. It's always something new in the weather here....very dynamic. Here are some pictures of Iowa weather:
Wave clouds...very freaky!

Tornado

Unlike here in St. Louis, MO we actually get snow in Iowa!!

And despite being a pain in the butt at times, it's quite beautiful.

And we had a really bad flood in the Cedar Rapids (20 minutes from my home) area in 2008 which also hit many surrounding areas and basically removed a few smaller towns from the map.
Here's downtown Cedar Rapids normally:

And here's that same area during the summer of 2008. Note the railbridge in the first picture is all knocked over and under water. Look at the heights of the other bridges (and some are totally under water). That's what 20 feet over flood stage looks like!

So yeah...Iowa really doesn't have much tourism to speak of (well, except our State Fair, which is the best in the nation), but it's an exciting place to live full of surprises and beauty.

What a great idea for a thread. These are some of my state with [naturally] my own general area first, lol.

I will add some more personal photos when I get some time. Just now, I'm on my way to Des Moines, Iowa. I believe there's a gold rush there or something!
