Paulo, I thought about you when I opened this month's Bark magazine and found an article about the Norman Rockwell exhibit called "Behind the Camera" There are several images containing dogs that he painted that they show in the magazine that are really cool. I'm trying to find them online but in the meantime here is a look at the exhibit.

I LOVE THIS ONE!! I love rocks and boulders, mountains and water! I love the north west. I miss the Rogue River.

We have a great big picture in our living room of Mt. Shasta that is painted on cardboard back in the 40's or 50's by a friend of my husband's grandfather. I worry about it being on cardboard!

sounds like its vary dear to you hart

I would worry about it being painted on card board too as this typ of paper is not desinde to be uesed for exstended time its laced with acids that were uesed to brake the wood pulp down in to smale threds caled fibrils ones this is don they will tangal more easaly forming the craft paper that is tipicly uesed in card board if the painting is valubal to you i would cunsalt a art conservator that spealises in paper restoration there are some things they can do to stabalise the paper its worth it if the painting is valubal how they do this depends on its age and what medeam has ben uesed to paint with if its pre 1900 you are probly safe as the papers uesed back then were fairly acid free but modern papers have to be put threw a bath of sodeam Bicarbanat to nutrals the acids and make what is caled a acid free or conservation paper i ues Archech 100% cotton papers they last for hundreds of years but on the down side each pice of paper that i ues cost 18$ US and many artist are just to poor to get this type of paper

wihich bring up an inportint fact if you love art and plan to buy any work of are make sure you ask the dealer of artist what he or she uesd to make there work this may seem a bit silly but i can tell you this after you pay from 500 to 50000 dollers for a water color or drawing and then find out such as you have that it has ben done on a unstabal pice of paper and that with in 10 year it will yelow and start to cumbal under the inflowins of acids left in the paper you will want to cry this aslow gos for work being properly seeld all water colors are suseptibal to the acid that hangs in are modern industrealised atmosphir so all workd need to be behind sonservation glass treated to keep uv light out and acid air at bay of your works will yelow and fad with time i do two thinks to insur this dosint hapen i apliey wax sealer to my water colors a vary uncomin pratis put it never yelows if its mad from bees wax and then i make sure that i ues good glass and seal the back of the pating with all conservation matireals dont for get tap it has acisd in it to get acid free taps and the art boards youed to mat your work must be acid free sorry i know you asked a siple question its not coplicated but it is hardt to exsplane in texst

Your explaination was good. I'm ignorant of this subject. We don't collect art except for afew things painted by family members which aren't worth anything to anyone but us. We try to carry on the personal touch to everything, like the frame for this one is very simple that my husband made with a neighbor telling him how to do it. We did go in and talk to the owner of an antique store once and he said basically the same thing you did. We've ignored the situation for now because of what kind of $$ this could cost if anything can be done at all. I think someone wrote the date on the back and we can see if it goes back far enough to be acid free. I know there is a little story handwritten on the back telling about this painting being bought for a couple pennies and some land traded between the two friends. I just took some pictures of it and will post it.

I think everyone is jumping the gun by deleting pictures. I don't post very many but the last year I pulled them in from photoshop because that is where they were. No one told anyone to delete photos. I saw it merely as a decussion that was put out there.

I won't be able to post the picture of Mt. Shasta until tomorrow. My computer froze and now I have the grandkids here that have taken my computer over.

I'm not good at taking pictures and I need a new camera! The glare is from the window. I did learn something today that I didn't know before. It's not painted on cardboard! My mother-inlaw has always just called it cardboard and maybe it's sort of like cardboard. Do you remember that thin pressed board that would be on the back of old console TVs, or what they made little kid record players out of. It is sort of like almost pressed board but if you break it in half it is like glorified cardboard that might even have some sort of fiber made up in it. Anyway, it's oil based paint, painted on that, in around 1942. It's looking faded and dirty and at some point, push is going to come to shove and we'll need to take it somewhere to have someone look at it.

Oooh ..... well, there was a white film across the picture from the glare so I clicked on 'auto fix' and it made the colors so much prettier!! It really looks somewhere in the middle of the original photo and the vibrant color one. But it IS in good condition, I hope for the age and all the unknowns about it. It is turning a sort of yukky color on the low sky line on each side of Mt Shasta and into the trees to the left. Ric made the frame and he thinks it's oak and then he rubbed a stain on it. If we need to take it off we surely will. I've learned so much in these few posts from you!! I will take a q-tip and some distilled water and rub just a little on a corner and then let it sit for a month or so and if nothing happens I'll do a little more.
