Say hello to my little friend....
..the Salticidae AKA Jumping Spider. They make no webs, just a single strand as a safety rope in case of a missed jump, eat all sorts of bugs including other spiders, and are friendly to and even somewhat curious about humans!
I really hope this one has a mate so they can take on the huge spider population in my garden and around the house. |

Re: Say hello to my little friend....
I just wonder how it came to my garden? I haven't imported anything in a very long time due to lack of space. Maybe from a neighbor.
I have a friend who says she usually see lots of jumping spiders in her yard but this year hasn't seen any. Then she told me she has lots of Praying Mantis this year. hmm |

Re: Say hello to my little friend....
Amazing that just showed up in your garden! It looks like something that would be in an expensive pet store here with a $150 pricetag on it!
It could have got loose on someone! It happened to me once as well as many others. I really like spiders and never ever kill them...even when they're in my place. They are very beneficial and eat all kinds of bothersome plant pests but never bothering the plants themselves. We used to have a tarantula and one night it got out of it's cage and was loose in the apartment! It was a funny sight, me in rubber boots on the bed, while my ex was trying to sweep it into a bucket and get it back into it's cage. I was terrified it would bite me! Now I'm fascinated by them and even let them crawl on me if there's one around. If I find them around the building I bring them into my apartment and put them on my many plants. I think I have 6 or 7 little ones around currently. They help keep spider mites in check which can be a serious problem indoors and I don't have to shower my plants as often because of them. Anyway, sorry to babble on but I like spiders and that one is especially cool, Mitchel. Love the stripes, You should keep him as a pet. He's way too cool. : ) |

Re: Say hello to my little friend....
Meh, I have enough pets already! I released it back to the garden after annoying it with my photo taking! It tried to grab the camera lens and once even jumped at it. Very cool.

Re: Say hello to my little friend....
Very cool, do you have the trap door spiders there too. I saw them in the mountains behind Santa Barbara when I was there and enjoyed luring them out of their holes.

Re: Say hello to my little friend....
I don't have any here in the yard that I know of. Mostly I have the big brown ones that live in the petioles where they meet the p-stems. I'm not even sure what they are called. I'm going to take pics and do some research soon.

Re: Say hello to my little friend....
Curious animal. I too was watching a smaller spider catching a significantly bigger fly the other day - yet he succeded (21 minutes of fighting, I've got it on my camcorder). Gotta admire arachnids!
