The price of plantains here has nearly doubled recently and is being blamed on the aftermath of storms Olga and Noel. Extra land is being planted up with new plants, but I suspect that by the time they fruit - normal production will be back on line. Our bananas are organic, but our banana marketing is a bit amateurish and we sadly don't reach the markets that we ought to. But this is the caribbean - so don't worry - be happy! AND the hurricane season is just getting underway......... Must get the coconuts cut down - some fell overnight as it was a bit windy, and broke some tiles on the roof of an outbuilding, and they were only small!

( but i have issues with gas going up and i fuss about that but not the nanas...whats wrong with this picture?) lol! cassie batton down the hatches, dig them spurs in, and hold tight to those reins....be careful this hurricane season and dont let those coconuts fall on your head!

Hopefully the heightened cost of bananas will drive more people to grow them. Right?

Checked the prices in the market today and they have nearly doubled - bananas are 5 pesos and plantains are 7 pesos EACH finger!! The rate of exchange is about 35 pesos to the dollar - which makes them .....erm! expensive - thats what! But I bought a couple of green plantains to make tostones with as I can't bear to mutilate my orinoco bunches - perhaps I will save them to dry for chips which my son loves.

Still seems strange to buy bananas here individually after buying them by the bunch in England - but of course they ripen so fast here in the heat, and many people have no refrigeration so it makes sense.

This lady who sells West African food at the Farmers Market said she might like to buy some of my bananas. I am wondering what to sell them for. Regular green store bananas are around 79 cents a pound. Mine are organic grown Orinoco.
It's Southern California and there are not a lot of bananas growing outside.
And I am thinking of trading for the baked goods she and others there have rather than making a lot of money at it. I think that would be a nicer way to trade for what I want.
Any advice is welcomed.

doing a trade is better in my opinion because you wont have to report income to the irs if you make more then a certian amount. and baked goods are always yummy. jmo.

Yeah, we've had some really wretched flooding in the plantation provinces. I'm not at all surprised.

In California there are serious laws regarding sale of prepared food and the sources of produce. Both the buyer and seller can be subject to enormous fines.

Thanks for your responses everyone.
Ricard, that is really kind of intimidating info about California. I'll be sure to limit giving bananas to people who are going to eat them themselves.

Yes, sorry to be the bearer of somber news. I sell at farmers markets and deal with the health department and agricultural department on a monthly basis -- neither of which talk to each other. As you can imagine, the biggest concern is sources of raw foods that are used in foods prepared for sale.

Yep Lorax - been bad here with 7.4 inches of rain in the last week - lots of people flooded out of their houses but today going over the mountains things looked better and seemed to be drying up at last. Those fronts coming down from the USA have been a problem for sure!!!

Cassie,
Honest to goodness we did not send it your way on purpose.
In fact, Southern California could use all the rain you can send back our way.
