Default My thread, your thread, their thread?

There has been a feeling expressed by some here that when a person starts a thread, they "own" it and govern who can post what. Now I understand if people object to a thread getting off-topic, but insisting upon a thread being "mine" ? I can't see how anyone owns a thread anymore than a conversation between people on the street.

For example, I started a thread called "Dragon Fruit update" initially about progress over at my place. People added to it with their updates and questions, and pretty soon it became a useful source of information. Great! The more of that, the better.

How do you all feel about this?

I have the same sentiment.. it should benefit all. Its not finders keepers around here. Just start it and see where it goes and how many it can possibly benefit in our pursuits of enhancing the many greenthumbs.. :^)

Nah, I agree...everyone is fully able to begin their own topic/thread, but beyond that, ride the wave of responses. Sure, you're able to help guide the discussion, but have fun, let people have fun and I hope we can all enjoy our discussions here, learn a few things and let people be themselves.

IM taco?

I think its all rather silly if people assume they own a thread because they started it.

I believe there is a difference between thread and floss... but anyways.. lol I can see how some folks here might get heated (extreme banana people) but only thing people possess is at home; not here, and it doesn't matter if you know everything or nothing about banana's.

Well, just general forum netiquette is to always read the complete thread/responses before posting. That way you know what is being discussed, what answers have been provided and where the discussion has gone. Otherwise, you might ask something that has been answered right above your post. I've seen it a million times before.

This is kinda intimidating when you are new to a forum since all the threads are a billion pages long and it takes a lot of reading to know what's happening...but once you've been there a while, it's not much to keep up with it.

Thanx Richard ! Saw this one coming! Think Jarred would say (for vital growing-info threads) to try & keep on-topic till the info's been gathered up. Know Jarred would say, keep things friendly as possible.
I don't own any threads cause I don't sew & hate flossing my teeth ! Rules for threads!?!?!?! Hope UR Joking !! No Way Ever!! Thread-wrecking & Thread-crashing? Don't look at me ! We were very much on-topic and I think Kate Moss & TyTy have Everything to do with "Corn Dollies". And NO, I don't spend hours at the TyTy nursery site Just to look at the models. I think using lewd, half-dressed models to sell bananas is Disgusting, degrading, and.... Sure wish they'd get rid of those models! I've seen them a thousand times, already! Couldn't possibly cost THAT much to get some New ones ! And why shouldn't the consumer have input into which models they hire!? Consumers should have more rights at obviously questionable sites that use sexy models to sell products! Right?

I must have missed something are we having a problem with threads i read this hole thread if i start a thread i feel responsible for monitoring it not that i interject if people take it a new direction some times the serendipity that comes with freedom to speak at will is awesome but i do feel an obligation to thank people for there input and i do so freely so i hope no one thinks that I'm trying to control the thread by doing this the only thread that i have ever taken in kind of control over is my growing in the desert thread its more of a blog and i do try to keep it on topic but we have digressed here and there its all good in the end

That's the perfect example of "try & keep on-topic". Despite photos, dental floss, & even Kate Moss, the info continues to add up!
Paul: This discussion has everything to do with people who start "conditional" threads. We're a little concerned about people making rigid rules dictating how people must act if they join "their" thread. I think the general conclusion is that threads should be open discussions that anyone (with something to offer) should be allowed to participate freely in, whenever they like.
Of course a game thread (ie. Story of 3 Words) should follow a simple game rule, but that's another story.

Anyway, back to it! If anyone's looking for me, I'll be in the European section checking out Corn Dollies !!

I'm kinda new to this whole forum thing so the netiquette as it was called I've never heard of. I do think it would be nice if in these threads you could comment on a comment. I'm brand new to this particular forum and therefor have never read most of them. Many are very long and have many pages. I've kinda wanted to comment on a pic or a post but it's so early in the thread that I'd feel stupid for commenting on it so late. As far as getting off topic....conversation is basically what these threads are....and conversation always changes as the trains of thought change. I understand if you post a question about aphids and they talk about skunks....unless skunk oil can rid aphids what are you talking about?!?! but if someone is upset about it then that's stupid. If someone like me is just goin around spamming just to see how many threads can be put in "new posts" with my name attached for fun. LOL not really my intentions but sometimes feels like it as I work my way through some of these threads. Maybe I'll start a thread called "last laugh" just to see if anyones interested in getting in the last word and keep it going. Only one rule. Nobody can have anything of substance to offer in it. Just spam spam spam and maybe a little jibber jabber. LOL Sorry if I ruined your post I'm still new at this.

.... You can press the quote button on the bottom of the post you want to comment on so that way people know about the post you were referring too if it is very far back in the thread. Hope this helps!
