Fast fact..

For comparison..(right now)the days are longer in Ohio than in Florida and even longer as one travels north.
However it is just the opposite in the winter.

Check out your day length.

Traverse City,Michigan.
Cincinnati,Ohio.

Cool thread. Wish I saw this earlier. Totally stoked about the solar eclipse. It's the most epic event since New Horizons made it's closest approach to the dwarf planet, Pluto, 14 July 2015. Btw, it will fly-by 2014 MU69 on 31 December 2018.

This will be the 1st solar eclipse to make landfall in the contiguous US since 1257 and the 1st solar eclipse visible here since 1979. The path of the moon and line of totality forms a line from Madras Oregon to Columbia South Carolina. So here, we just get 84% and the eclipse will last from 11:37 to 14:34 cdt, with a midpoint at 13:05. But it's a short trip north to the line of totality. Yeah, I totally want to be there, not here, lol.
The chances of this happening this nearby is about 1 in 370 years.
Always looking up...

I think you need to re-check your dates for Solar Eclipses in the US. I witnessed a total solar eclipse March 1970 in South Georgia; and another (angular) solar eclipse May 1984 in South Georgia.

My bad. Left some stuff out.
"Landfall in the US" = Can only be seen in the US.
Also, I was only talking total eclipses.
I wasn't here for that 7 March 1970 total eclipse - so this is my first - but I did google. The path only ran through Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. It was mostly over the Gulf of Mexico and the ocean.

But hey, 2 more total eclipses can be seen here in 2024 and 2045 and I'll be watching. They'll be even closer than this one.

Still waiting for the 1st test launch of the new Angara heavy lift rocket. Will probaly happen from Plesetsk in Archangelsk and land in Kamchatka...

Btw, does anyone else agree that Vostochny should have been named Tsiolkovsky and just drop the name-change for Uglegorsk? I mean, they did try that in Volgograd and that was total fail...
