Re: Keep looking up!!
Yesterday, I saw the Falcon 9 launch in the predawn sky, and it was effing awesome!
Anyone who is within 500-600 miles of the east coast can see these launches if it's dark. They literally follow the coast on a north/south orbit, but as the world turns, it follows the coast. There are probably 50 things that I have seen/done/experienced that most people will never see/do/experience, but this is in the top 5. It was THAT spectacular. It's up there with getting hit by three meteorites.

Re: Keep looking up!!
A long time ago, while standing on the shore of a Canadian lake, I saw something in the sky that I never saw before or after. There were two circles, one was white, with the sun at its center, and the other was a rainbow colored circle, approximately the same size, tangential to the first like a figure 8. These two circles covered maybe 1/3 of the sky from horizon to horizon.

Re: Keep looking up!!
About 20 years ago, around Labor day, about an hour before sunset, I was laying on my lawn, staring at the sky. I watched three separate strata of flying animals catching insects to eat. The lowest strata, about 50 ft. high, was composed of dragon flies. The next strata, about 300 ft. high, was composed of bats. The highest strata, about 500 ft. high, was composed of nighthawks. Remarkably, all three kinds of animals exhibited similar erratic flying patterns. There are no lakes or rivers within 10 miles of my house, so I have no idea where the dragon flies came from, but there were hundreds of them. It's a wonder that the bats and nighthawks didn't go after the dragon flies.

Re: Keep looking up!!
That's it! You're about two hundred miles to the east, so you had some light in the sky. It was still dark here. I tried snapping a pic with my phone but don't know how to slide the contrast thingy, so I got four or five pics of black, LOL.

Tik tok......
Plan ahead...split,repot and transplant your plants. Give them some time to regenerate. Your days are getting shorter by a minute..Fall is just a few more minutes away. Last edited by cincinnana : 07-07-2021 at 08:28 PM. |

Cannot wait for it to cool down a bit, and to stay dark longer in the morning!

Re: Keep looking up!!
Perseus is pretty easy to spot, too. Find Orion, because everyone knows where Orion is, and go up diagonally to the right, sort of in a line with the stars in his belt. There will be a faint smudge that disappears if you look directly at it. That is the Pleiades, and Perseus sits right on top of it.
